Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

It's better than it was when I first bought it, but agreed, it's not error free.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

Do we have any word from Lenovo as to whether this is harware or software, and what is being done to correct.

I run a law firm.  Everyone gets the same.  We have been on Sony VIAO VPCZ13KGX, but can't upgrade to W10.

I need reliable computers to get work out - not lab toys to play with.

I have had bad reliability issues with Dell, and, for that reason, purchased a 20HR000FU in April with a mfg date of 2/17, but returned  its after 3 days of not being able to move the cursor in a regular manner.

I thought Lenovo would have issue solved by now, and bought a second tha is to be delivered on May 29.

I need to know if Lenovo is still having similar issues, if so, then I may have to look at Dell XPS 13 - they have the WQHD screens and I don't hear about touchpad issues.

What is really disturbing is that Lenovo Sales and Tech Support all deny any issue with their touchpads.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

@FordLadd: I posted some comments about XPS13 earlier since I don't think it's an exactly like-for-like comparison - for your law firm I think there are more considerations than just the touchpad issue, i.e. robustness, support, long term reliability, availability of parts, ease of replacing battery, etc. In this case, despite the current issue, I think ThinkPads still have a lot going for them. For such a large investment maybe you should be waiting a quarter for such a new model to settle down though before making a decision.

@maz3max: I agree that the near silence from Lenovo is frustrating. I kind of wonder whether enterprise accounts higher up the food chain are getting more feedback. If it is a hardware issue I could live with a recall/new trackpad sent out, but would be a bit upset if it's a design flaw (e.g. interferrence). It's hard to tell how common it is with new users (since working ones probably don't come here), but we've still seen a few new ones with faults over the last fortnight I think.

BTW one angle of attack we haven't considered - how many people who get the touchpad issues have WWAN/LTE cards installed?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

Thank you for your comment.  I have a small law firm that must convert from W7-64 Pro to W10-64 Pro, and, as you noted, came to conclusion that on paper, the Carbon X1 with i7, 16GB, 512SSD, and highest video was the best choice for us.  That's why I bought the 20HR000FUS, only to find the touchpad and any connected mouse did not work, or worked very seldomly.  Even Lenovo Support could not get it to work on remote.  I had to turn off the Carbon by holding the power button because I could't get the cursor to move with the touchpad, pointer, or mouse.  That prevented all work from getting out, and reverting files back to my good ol Sony VAIOs.  Problem there is that the NVIDIA Geforce GT 330M drivers won't update to W10, otherwise they have the Intel 7260 for 886 WiFi, and run like champs.  I expected similar from the new Carbons.  My new one is still being build.  I truly want Lenovo to correct this because I have had horrible experience with Dell's reliability.  But, one has to wonder what Lenovo will do when Sales and Tech Support each state they have not heard of any touchpad issues, that mine was the first case they have heard about.  Maybe we need to yell louder because the carbon, particullarly with WQHD looks like what I want.  And, yes, had bought WWAN card for when WiFi is not available.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

Thanks Andy.

Just to confirm: that link currently has 19.3.4.86 released 10-MAY-17 (which is higher than your beta which was 19.3.4.81) - is .86 the new version, or are you expecting something newer? (I think most people on here on Windows are probably already using .86)

Edit: I think the ReadMe has been updated since I last looked - it says revision 02 and includes:

- Fixed an issue where Pointing from touchpad becomes unusable intermittently
  on X1 Carbon 5th Gen(Machine Type: 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3, 20K4)

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017 Gen5 Touchpad Issue

Thanks Andy.

I hope this update can make this issue fixed perfectly and it feels great until now.

I turned on the Edge Tap Filtering again and will use this laptop with this setting several day hoping there is no issue any more.
