Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

We just purchased two of these laptops, after having purchased dozens of them over the last few years, and we have this peculiar issue with these two which we didn't have with any of the other ones (no exageration) - which is that when the laptop's are shutdown they reboot instead of shutting down.

Now I am aware of this https://support.lenovo.com/nz/en/solutions/ht117681, but I am wondering if anyone has found out what the underlying cause of this might be ... or are we the only ones with this issue on the X1 Carbon 6th gen?

My Thinkpad History since 1998: 760C, 380ED, 600X, T21, T23, T30, R30, R31, T40, T40p, R51, T41, T42, T43, T60, R61, X31, X61, T61, T400, T420, T440p.
Current Personal Thinkpads: R61, T400, T420, T440p - Other Thinkpads regularly handled currently: T430, T440, X230, X240, X250, X260

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

The factory preload does not behave this way, so I think it must be caused by some software that you have installed yourself.  Probably your AV software.  Please try disabling fast startup in Windows 10 and see if the problem still happens.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

I am not entirely sure at what point in the setup this occurred, however the suggestion that it's our AV software seems a bit far fetched. We have over a dozen Thinkpads running in this office and all are running the same version of the same AV software, and this is (literally) the first time I see this behaviour occur.
As for disabling fast startup - that's one fo the very first things I do when setting up new systems. But since this "feature" seems to reset itself with some Windows Updates I can triple check that.

And other suggestions?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

I've got the same problem with my X1C.  I predominately use the laptop docked in the office.

I shutdown and all monitors go to Power Save, and the laptop powers down.  After ~3 seconds it powers back up.

I've double checked the Power settings and Fast Startup is Disabled.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

The following appears to have solved the issue.  The X1C no longer restarts after shutdown.

In BIOS, DISABLE the following:

Network

- Wake on LAN

- Wake on LAN from Dock

Power

- Power On with AC Attached

Thunderbolt 3

- Wake by Thunderbolt

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

Unfortunately nothing is completely stopping this behaviour. At the moment (with the suggested BIOS settings and with the latest BIOS installed) it usually takes 2 shutdowns to turn off the laptop when it's docked.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

Not sure what else to suggest.  The BIOS changes have solved the issue for me. I've experienced no "restarts".

Searching on the internet regarding similar problems experienced with other brands suggested issues with the Thunderbolt software.

Does the laptop behave the same if it is undocked?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

- Laptop off the dock and not connected to anything (no AC or peripherals)
- Boot up
- Login
- Shutdown
This sequence never had a problem.

I even tried to complicate it a bit more like this:

- Laptop off the dock and not connected to anything (no AC or peripherals)
- Boot up
- Login
- Close Lid (goes to standby)
- Open Lid (wakes up from standby)
- Shutdown
Also no problem.

What is the information you are finding about Thunderbolt?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen restarts when shutdown

Hi, I have the exact same problem with my 2018 X1 Carbon. Tried all that stuff above, but still have the problem.
