Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen USB3 PD slow charging with Samsung 45W PD travel adapter

2020-05-17, 15:15 PM

Hello Lenovo and community,

I bought a 45W Samsung USB-C PD charger (EP-TA845XBEGWW) to charge my Thinkpad (and my phone) while on the road. (Its small for its powerrating, very convenient.)

It does charge, but it shows just a few Watts of charging power. Together with the power usage of the laptop it adds up to about 10 Watts.

In certain situations it does not charge the battery, but merely decreases the discharge rate a bit or the SOC % just does not change at all. (I probably use as much power as is provided at that moment.)

It charges the battery slowly (presumably also at around 10W power) while the laptop is off or in standby.

I suspect it does not negotiate towards a voltage above 5V. (A X1C 6G does charge at 5V input voltage on USB-C.)

The Samsung charger claims support for all PD-voltages up to 20V (2,25A).

Could this be a laptop firmware issue and be fixed? I would say it should work. There have been more issues with this laptop in the past that seem to have been fixed by now with updates.

I unfortunately do not have a USB-C PD analyzer to check what is actually going on. The charger comes with a 5A rated cable (probably with an embedded E-marker chip).

Is this maybe a known issue?

Thanks!
