Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen.9 + USB-C-Dock no USB with Bitlocker

2021-07-26, 11:50 AM

Hi there,

we got some cool new Hardware for the office but got a little problem right now:

we can't use our USB-Keyboards for the Bitlocker-PIN. we only can enter the Bitlocker-Pin via build-in Keyboard.

The setting is :

Keyboard [via USB-Cable] to USB-C-Dock (ThinkPad USB-C Doch Gen2) [via USB-C-Cable] to X1 Carbon Gen9.

Is this a normal behave or can this be fixed? (it seems like noch USB-hardware seems to work until boot up, also no Mouse, Barcode-Scanner, USB-Hub works)

Welcome to the Community

Try attaching the external keyboard directly to the X1, bypassing the dock. I've a feeling the dock drivers don't load until after the Bitlocker key is put in. The POST environment can identify a keyboard attached to a port replicator, but maybe not through a dock. Just my guess.

If tested this before the post, but this does also not work.

I guess it is a "security-feauture" from Bitlocker, so you have do "pair" your USB-Devices(via BIOS or UEFI) first to get them working (to prevent any sniffing or something like that)

Looks like that's the case. Did a Google search and this hits across many brands. Sometimes, security measures can be a pain, but you'll be thankful for them should anything happen to the computer. :)
