Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2, FHD (500 nits): brightness is too high or too low

2019-10-22, 11:32 AM

I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2, FHD (500 nits).

All is great, but i encounter an issue with the screen control.

The brightness control is not linear.

At 100% (brightness control), the brightness is something above 500 nits. That is cool.

But at 90% (brightness control), it drops at about 250 cd/m², and at 80%  I measured ~150 cd/m².

It seems it is a limitation of the hardware, because we have a Thinkpad P1 2019 with the same panel (N156HCE-GN1), and it has exactly the same behaviour.

Is there a workaround to fix that ?

For instance, i wish i could work at 350 nits, but it is not possible....

250 nits is barely enough in a bright room, and 500 nits is too much.

I have not even seen the panel so I can hardly be considered an expert, but do you have ther latest inf file for the screen?

Perhaps someone with more direct experience can help..

I think I would find that too bright also

@richk I use Lenovo Vantage which features the latest firmware and drivers for my laptop.

All are up to date.

Windows 10 is up to date too.

Meanwhile I found a workaroud.

In Windows 10 Display Settings, i can adjust the brightness between 90% to 100% (90, 91, 92 .. 100).

Thus if i choose 94%, i have something around 350 nits (see the picture below).

But if i change the brightness with the keyboard (F5 and F6), it will reverse to 90% or 100%.

For now, i am pretty satisfied. Waiting for a fix from Lenovo.

Great.  Windows display settings was going to be my next suggestion.

I noticed that when using hybrid graphics, thus using Intel GPU, the brightness is severely lacking on my 500 nit FHD X1E. I had a flickering issue that went away when I set BIOS to "discrete", thus using NVIDIA GPU, and I noticed that 80% brightness was WAY brighter. Perhaps you should try setting it to discrete just to see if you have the same issue.

I had a similar issue where I wanted finer control of the brightness, something like 75% instead of 70% or 80%. This led me to a nifty touch-screen app in the Windows Store called TouchMe (haha), so I would adjust brightness with 4-finger pinch. However, that was on a Yoga 720 with touchscreen and won't do me any good here. However, perhaps there is a similar app that can do display brightness via touchpad gesture.

BTW, remember that there is an ongoing problem with the latest Intel VGA driver that reduces the max brightness on several models, including X1EG2.

Is there a fix for this?

At the least, has someone posted the original driver version since my new Yoga 5th gen is so dim I keep turning lights on (to no effect :-)?
