Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 Thunderbolt egpu freeze before BIOS post

2019-11-11, 20:02 PM

Reposting in correct sub forum:

Hello,

who is using the Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen2 with an eGPU ?

I have it perfectly working fine with my Razor Core X but once I reboot the laptop or cold boot into the OS, it just hangs before BIOS POST (black screen, no beep). I tired

Disabled Kernel DMA protection
Disabled Thunderbolt security
Changed to Legacy boot mode
Update firmware of the X1 to 1.27
Using Nvidia 2080S or AMD Vega 64 Cards
Testing both TB3 ports

Does have someone similar experience ?

I can only POST with egpu unattached and then connect it during OS boot which is quite annoying.

Thanks

Bjoern

Same Problem here. Looks like it is a whitelist in bios that prevent egpu from booting with POST... I hope lenovo could solve this problem. Sarcasticly, my old xps works fine with egpu. That's really not what I expect from a 2019 $2500+ laptop

I have the similar problem.
I am using Think Pad P1 Gen2 and Mantiz Venus eGPU with a MSI GeForce GTX 1070Ti.

I can reboot or cold boot the laptop with egpu attached.
But sometimes it hangs (no beep, the BIOS Logo shows).

I can reproduce the problem with the following steps:
1. unattach power adapter, egpu or anything else.
2. power on the laptop (battery only) .My operating system is Windows 10 pro ( Lenovo Pre-installed).
3. put the laptop to sleep by close the lid. after 3 hours, It will switch to hibernate Automatically(Maybe I can put it to hibernate directly, haven't try yet.)
4. attach the egpu. The laptop will still be in hibernate mode. and It will start charging via Thunderbolt.
5. open the lid. the laptop is woken up. but the egpu not working.
6. reboot. the laptop will hang (no beep, the BIOS Logo shows).

My BIOS version is 1.27.

eGPU is really a big topic.

I now always boot without having the eGPU plug in. After the thunderbolt software started running, perhaps 5 to 10 seconds after the logging in, then only I plugin.

Good afternoon,

I have a Lenovo x1 Extreme Gen 2 with the NVIDIA 1650. I currently purchased the Razer Core X Chroma along with the 2080 Super. Do you have any advice for me to get the best performance out of it? I noticed your post and I thought I would ask ...

Are you still having issues with the reboot? What type of games do you play and what is your FPS? Also, do you use internal or external monitor.

Also, do you have to disable your 1650 prior to connecting the EGPU?

Thank you for your help.

Yes I disable the 1650 to get the most out of the stability and use a 2080 Super card with a external monitor.

I get the following performance with super position which is easy to reproduce:

The problem is that Lenovo created a internal ticket last year and full patching up to today, did not resolve the issue, nor did they contact me again.

This problem is really annoying me to a point I will change back to Dell or Apple as Thunderbolt is a bit tricky with software and hardware and Lenovo doesn't seem

to care about these problems.

Too bad, I went to several Lenovo laptops which I all licked but they all had some issues here and there like the famous BIOS locking for SATA controller which locked out Linux as OS

Re:Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 Thunderbolt egpu freeze before BIOS post

Good Evening Everyone,

Does anyone else experience this issue? Most of the time (Which is pretty much all of the time) when I plug my Egpu into my Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 my laptop freezes and I have to shut it down. Most of the time it takes 3-4 shut downs before my EGPU will work. This can't be normal...But I don't know how to fix it. One thing...When I use my EGPU ... I do not have my AC adapter connected. I use my TB3 to charge my device. Is this how everyone else does it or? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

My setup

Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 w/ 1650 graphics card

Razer Core Chrome with 2080 Ti.
