Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 TrackPoint issue

2019-12-09, 2:54 AM

I recently purchased an X1 Extreme Gen 2, and I noticed that the TrackPoint is very choppy compared to an X1 Carbon Gen 7 I also recently purchased. The touchpad is smooth and operational, but the mouse movement using the TrackPoint is imprecise and not smooth. I removed the red cap from both laptops, and noticed that the two laptops' physical pointing sticks are different. I also noticed that the X1 Extreme has the "Synaptics Pointing Device" driver, while the X1 Carbon has the "ELAN TrackPoint Device" driver (although it is probably supposed to be like that).

Anyone else experienced this problem or have a solution (not sure if it's problem with the driver, hardware, or something else)?

Thanks!

Hi !

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums.

Try to configure the sensitivity slider under TrackPoint settings and observe if you'll see any changes.

Synaptics Trackpoint Control Panel

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. All the sensitivity slider does is adjust how much distance the cursor travels for a given force applied to the TrackPoint. The movement of the pointer itself, though, is still not smooth; it seems as if the number of inputs per second from the TrackPoint is lower than the touchpad or connected mice.

Are you expiriencing lag/delay when you're using the trackpad? Does the issue occur out of the box?

No. The trackpad and any connected mice operate perfectly fine; I got this computer aorund 2 weeks ago and I think the TrackPoint has been like this since the first day. Not sure if it's a driver issue, hardware issue, or something else.

Isn't the Extreme supposed to be ELAN and Carbon is Synaptics? Atleast I have installed the ELAN TrackPoint driver on my Extreme gen 2 and it works, are you sure you have the right driver installed?

edit. Actually the TrackPoint FIRMWARE is ELAN, have you installed that?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 TrackPoint issue

Hi, I have installed both "TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" and "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (Version 1709 or later)." These two drivers do not say anything about ELAN? For reference, I have attached some pictures.

Also, when I updated the firmware using the TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility mentioned above, there was a popup saying that I had an ALPS TrackPoint, not an ELAN one.

Thanks for replying

Interesting. They must have changed the provider for the most recent firmware then. When I bought my X1E2 I updated the TrackPoint firmware which was downloaded from Lenovo official X1E2 driver site and that firmware bricked the TrackPoint and it was a known problem by then and the TrackPoint only came alive after they released a new firmware update few weeks later.

That firmware which bricked the TrackPoint was Elantech which I believe is same as the ELAN. And they changed the provider to another it seems. If you haven't read this, you can see the situation back then.

Especially look at my post #7 and the error log where it says Elantech. Of course it is no help for your situation and you might need to contact support if it's a hardware problem.

That's interesting. Is your TrackPoint (ELAN driver) completely operational now after the most recent firmware update (I assume it is the 1.0.1.2 firmware update in the link you previously provided)?

Edit: After looking at the post you provided, I checked Windows Update and saw that my computer had already installed those updates.

I already installed the "TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility" before, and I tried to install it again just to make sure. Screenshots below say that my computer has an ALPS pointing device (even though I had already ran this ELAN TrackPoint firmware update which I assumed was supposed to update the firmare to ELAN); not sure if that is supposed to be the case.
