Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 - laptop screen issues

2019-10-04, 9:18 AM

Hi - just received my thinkpad X1 extreme gen 2 with UHD screen.

The screen is horrible - it looks like its covered in some sort of mesh - so especially it is seen on white background looking like millions of little dark dots

plus windows look very blurry

changed the resolution to FHD, changed the scalling - it remains the same - when connected to the external monitor - there is no issue on the second screen but the built in laptop screen is just horrible.

disabled UHD graphics in BIOS - no change.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

would that be some sort of screen protector, antiglare or protecting foil?

Thanks in advance

I have the x1 extreme gen 2 uhd model also and have not noticed that issue. I will say I think I slightly prefer the dell xps uhd model as the glossy screen makes colours pop a bit more but they are very similar by my eye.

Maybe go to your local electronics store and compare, although the x1 extreme gen 1 uhd had a glossy screen and gen 2 is matte so it will look different if the gen 1 model is on display.

Text in a word document should look super crisp and I do not notice any little black dots when I am using MS word or browsing sites with white backgrounds.

Many thanks for reply

Attached is a screenshot of the laptop screen - and this is some sorf of 'filter' or mesh' across the built in screen which is very annoying.

Is there a protective foil on the screen that I should take off or something?

There was no protective screen on mine no. That definitely is not what you want to see after purchasing an expensive laptop, sorry for you having to deal with this.

My only suggestion is contacting Lenovo support directly. Even from this image from my crappy phone camera and poor lighting conditions, my laptop monitor does not look like that.

I looked at my driver for my card and it is more recent than yours maybe try with the new driver 26.21.14.3615 from 24/8/2019. The Nvidia GeForce Experience app is what I use to get all the updates to drivers

I received my

X1 Extreme 2nd Gen

just yesterday with the highest spec i9 and etc. Comes with UHD OLED display and I have exactly the same issues, the display I can see how the pixels are standing out, like it has kind of mash or mosaic effect on the screen itself. Tried switching Display setting in the BIOS to discrete graphics but its the same, it is the feeling.

Sorry to hear that. I was googling up and found at another forum that it's due to the touch screen. Normally the UHD OLED screen is non-touch so Lenovo fitted some sort of 3rd party touch screen and thats the effect of that.

I have returned my and Lenovo did not even ask a single question what was wrong or what could they do.

Unfortunatelly in UK the UHD screen only comes in a touch version - so probably all those screens will have the same issue.

Im afraid you wont be able to do anything with any settings or firmware/ bios upgrade, etc.

Hi, can you please post me the link where you've read about this?

They have asked me whether I want a refund or a replacable item and I've selected a replacement. If this is caused due to 3rd party that will be very bad indeed, as the laptop itself is actually good.
