Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 3 shuts down while playing

2020-10-09, 19:10 PM

I got my laptop (X1 Extreme 3rd gen, 20TKCTO1WW) a few weeks ago and I thought i`d try how much my laptop can handle, so I tried playing the witcher 3. Everything worked fine and fast. After 40 Minutes of playing the game gets slow for a few seconds and the laptop shuts down completely. It takes a few minutes till I can turn it on again. This happens every time now after around 40 minutes of playing. I guess its a problem with the temperature (recorded at maximum of 105 °C). Is it normal for this laptop to overheat so much that it shuts down after a short while? It seems like the setup could handle the game easily, if it was not for the heat problem.

Or is there another problem I missed?

I updated everything in  Vantage, so everything should be up to date.

Any ideas/imput what to do?

Thank you in advance

Shouldn't do...

What mode are you on? Performance or Ultra-performance?

Tried to put it on ultra performance and also downloaded an App (TPFancontrol) and put it on 7. But the fan is not always working on maximum with that, but instead switches between barely noticable to really loud several times.

That did not answer my question.

When you play - did you try playing in Performance and does it still shut down?

This helped me too

If you're using TPFanControl for testing then edit the TPFanControl.ini

MenuLabelSM1=Smart Mode 1/  Label for Icon Menu, must be terminated by '/'

Level=60 64  // Level=140 0

Level=65 64  // Level=150 1

Level=75 64              // Level=165 3

Level=80 64  // Level=175 7

Level=90 64  // Level=195 64

MenuLabelSM2=Smart Mode 2/  Label for Icon Menu, must be terminated by '/'

Level2=22 64  // Level2=70 0

Level2=33 64  // Level2=90 1

Level2=38 64  // Level2=100 2

Level2=44 64  // Level2=110 3

Level2=55 64  // Level2=130 7

Level2=66 64  // Level2=150 64

Level2=77 64  // Level2=170 128

--- switch to one of the smart profiles and it should ramp them up to full speed

Sorry for taking so long to answer, I was very busy and could not try it again. I found the setting on the battery tab and put it on ultra performance and it worked, no more crashes for now, The TP-Fan Control did not work for me. Also the standard automated performance setting does not work while I thought this would automatically put it in the right mode, but it didnt apparently. Thank you for the help! The Lenovo support I got did not know about this and told me to buy an external fan to cool the laptop and that it was not layed out for gaming so it is normal to crash.
