Thinkpad X1 Extreme : RAM Upgrade

2019-01-07, 20:56 PM

Hi everyone,

I've just add a RAM module (ballistix sport lt bls16g4s26bfsd) to my X1 Extreme laptop and I have a 'problem' with the frequency of the RAM.

Its a 2666 Mhz capable RAM module but it shows as a 2400 Mhz in the task manager.

I've read that I have to use xmp profile in the Bios to set the frequency of the RAM module but I can't see option for that in the Bios..

Any idea on how to set the frequency of the RAMat 2666 Mhz ?

Many Thanks

Narek

Ballistix RAM doesn't work in laptops without XMP enabled in BIOS. You need RAM that supports 2666MHz in regular JEDEC specs. Return the Ballistix part asap and get a different brand/model. What else do you have available for purchase? There are several 2666 MHz choices that should work, like: Kingston HyperX 2666 CL15, CORSAIR Vengeance 2666 CL18, G.SKILL Ripjaws 2666 CL18.

See below per PSREF it will run at 2400 due to intel limitation.

Ignore PSREF in this particular case. RAM runs at 2666MHz without any issues, as long as RAM module has a standard JEDEC 2666 profile. Here is the info & AIDA64 benchmark for the Samsung module included in a very simillar P1 (my current laptop):

Thanks for all your responses.

OK, I will forget about Ballistik in this case,.

I will try CORSAIR Vengeance 2666 CL18, I will keep you posted on the results.

Best regards

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update on my personal experience on RAM upgrade.

As I said I have bought Corsair Vengance 16gb 2666 Mhz and it run perfectly at the written speeds.

Thanks to ciuvak1 for the suggestion!

I now have 48 gb of RAM running at 2666 MHz (I have attached a screenshot for your notice)

One thing I have noticed is that the 32gb ram stick had to be plug in on the left-hand side (when the laptop is fliped aroud, heat pipe are up) and the 16gb ram stick on the right side to boot, otherwise the laptop won't boot, don't know why ..?

Thanks again for the support

Wishing you all a great day

Best regards

Narek

Hi Narek,

so you have bought the only available 32GB SODIMM module from Samsung? Can you please test with HWiNFO tool the dual channel mode and speed because in Taskmanager my X1 shows also 2667 MHz, but I have only one 16GB module which is running in single channel mode.

For reference my X1 Extreme was delivered with this SODIMM:

Micron - DDR4 - 16 GB - SO DIMM 260-PIN - 2666 MHz / PC4-21300 - CL19 - 1.2 V - ungepuffert - non-ECC (MTA16ATF2G64HZ-2G6E1)

Thanks

Markus

Are you sure HyperX is should work?

This is XMP too.

Has anyone try this RAM?
