Thinkpad X1 Extreme is displaying black screen after singing in, with movable mouse cursor only

Hi,

I am having problem with my Thinkpad X1 Extreme. I can sign in with pin/ password/ fingerprint without any issue. After singing in black screen is getting displayed with a visible mouse pointer that can be moved around the screen, but other than this nothing else can be done.

Can anyone please help me with the issue?

Thanks

Re: Thinkpad X1 Extreme is displaying black screen after singing in, with movable mouse cursor only

I just found a solution and it worked perfectly. Hope others will get help from this.

Detailed Instructions:

  • At the black screen, Press and Hold the Power Button until the system powers off.  This typically takes 5-8 seconds.
  • Press the Power Button to power on the system. Continue to Hold Shift and F8 keys.
  • The Lenovo logo should appear on the screen followed by an option to press Enter.
  • Press Enter and Release Shift and F8 keys at this time.
  • Click on Troubleshoot.
  • Click on Advanced Options.
  • Click on "See More Recovery Options".
  • Click on "Startup Settings".
  • Click on Restart.
  • Press 4 to “Enable Safe Mode” as prompted on Startup Settings Screen.
  • Enter user name and password to log into Safe Mode.
  • Click on Start in taskbar.
  • Type “devmgmt.msc” and Press Enter to start Device Manager.
  • Expand Display Adapters.
  • Right Click on Intel and NVIDIA item and Choose Uninstall from the menu.
  • At the “Confirm Device Uninstall” prompt, Check “Delete the driver software for this device” and Click OK.
  • Restart the PC.
  • The PC will now boot to Windows normally.
  • Enter user name and password as prompted, to log in.
  • Check Internet Connection, Run Windows Update and Install All Available Updates.
  • The PC should now function normally.
