I just bought a new X1 Extreme with 256 GB SSD , 16 GB RAM and Full HD.
It's now 2 days that I got it and I also have the problem with fans.
They have this high pitch whistle and it's not coil wine but the airflow.
What I've discovered (while upgrading RAM) is that when I open and remove the bottom cover and then turn the laptop ON
this noise is gone... I can only hear airblow and no whistling... I need to inspect this further when I get home.
Is there some solution for this, maybe someone has the same problem?
It seems to me like something is blocking/disturbing the airflow when bottom cover is in place...

I just bought a refurbished X1 Extreme and the fan is loud, yes, but there also seems to be a sort of additional sound, perhaps "electronic" is the proper term, but very irritating. I've owned W510, W520 with Extreme processor but this is louder than that, and I have little doubt the original owner returned it and they just "refurbished" it and sent it out to me. I'm going to demand they send me a new one.

High pitch noise from fans is due to the anti dust mesh on the bottom. I have removed only the parts where the vents are and that noise is gone.
The other noise is due to the electronics and that is a matter of luck... some people get it with very low noise where you can barely hear it.

I have this exact same problem right now. I have the i9, x1 gen 2. It makes this static electric, almost white noise sounding buzz. And behind it there's an audible high pitched screetching noise.
