Thinkpad X1 OLED Release date? April?

2016-04-11, 22:57 PM

Any information on the OLED screen for the X1 Yoga.  It was supposed to be in April.  I've been awaiting a replacement unit with the OLED screen since december.

Also wondering about the release date ... (and already waiting for several months!)

Spent several hours looking through various websites in order to obtain more informations concerning this date and correlated details (but was unsuccessful for now).

I used the live chat on Lenovo's website, and the rep said this:

OLED has been put on hold or stopped for X1 Yoga.
I think the cost was expensive.
So it wasn't working out well so they stop development of it.
We get this question about 1 time very 2 days in chat these days :(
I will ask our .com team to remove reference of OLED on website for X1 Yoga

Can someone official from Lenovo please confirm this? If the OLED option has indeed been cancelled, that'd be a great disappointment! Have been waiting since Jan 2016 for the OLED X1 Yoga model-- esp considering so many places wrote glowing reviews about it online!

--- Edit (4/21/16) ---

Just live-chatted with Lenovo Rep who said the OLED X1 Yoga option is "not cancelled" but will definitely not be released in April 2016.  The rep said he had "no idea" what the release date would be & theoretically it could be pushed to even 2017!

Lenovo US replied to a reddit thread about it, and they said "It just recently became available to corporate and education customers. I'm estimating a date of May 16th for lenovo.com."

Here is the whole thread if you're interested.

Thank you for this post!  Also-- this morning I called & spoke w/ a Lenovo rep-- the rep said two weeks ago, they'd received an official/formal update that on lenovo.com, OLED on X1 Yoga won't be available until June.  The rep then went further to say though that come June, it'd be anyone's guess if the option would be actually available for order online.

OLED models are appearing in the PSREF:

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Come on Lenovo get your act together!:smileyfrustrated: You said April we are heading into June now and  still no OLED, HP already has it  available on their HP Spectre X360 convertible and shipping. This is very agravating.:smileymad: If this takes any longer am going to have to pull trigger on HP

Strange, after my posting on this board that hp had it available on their spectre x360, Hp took down their webpage that was offering the OLED configuration. At first I thought I was losing it but when I look at my browsing history the particular web page appears but now taken down. Did Hp inadvertently make a mistake or are PC makers in collusion when they will release technology to the general public? I picture Lenovo scolding them for that "We have an unwritten agreement on these matters!! :smileymad:" Lol. Or Lenovo possibly whined and complained to the supplier (I believe samsung is building the OLED displays) and the supplier told hp to pull the product off for now. Who knows ........... we all have to sit it out now

Re: Thinkpad X1 OLED Release date? April?

It seems that they have really been coming up short on the Thinkpad line. It seems that they are consistenly missing deadlines to meet certain features. For example, I have lost count on how many times Lenovo said they would include discrete graphics on their 14" T series Thinkpad line.  It said it on their spec sheet, the website, and in all the reviews. Yet, when you go and try to buy it, it is never an option. This has been going on for how many generations of Thinkpads? I stopped paying attention when they did it again to the t450. Not sure if they did it this time.

In this case, I would not be suprised if OLED never happens to the first gen x1 yoga. It is just another feature that could set themselves apart, but they just fail to deliver on it. It makes me wonder if OLED was simply a last minute marketing requirement, rather than a feature that was planned in the R&D phase. Ofcourse, one also has to question if the OLED screens were just too premature on laptops to begin with. You can't fault Lenovo for that, but they need to be more realistic on what they can really do because it just looks like broken promise after broken promise.

I imagine that one reason they have not released this is cost. The highest end x1 Yoga is 2 grand. How much is the OLED version gonna cost you?  At some point, the cost is just not worth it. Meanwhile, in the more consumer Yoga line, the Yoga 900 gets updated with the Iris Core for graphics, but that goes under the radar and there is no price increase.

I have, honestly, just accepted the fact that Lenovo is a very Marketing centric company. It is too bad they spend time on marketing stuff that may hot happen. But then again, what sounds better? First OLED display on a laptop or lightest 2in1 laptop with the iris graphics core [that is throttled down]?
