Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

2018-10-17, 3:03 AM

Hey FrankLin,

Thanks for sharing your case; it further strengthens my concern that my machine is not, as the representative had said to me, an one-off issue.

In your opinion, this is an IC board issue, which means replacing the OLED won't help? Or by changing the screen, it will just push the issue to a further day?

FYI I had my screen replaced, and it fixed the issue . . . for all of 4 days.

First I noticed a small band of darker area across the screen, and it has since been getting progressively worse.  It's not yet as bad as it was before the screen replacement, but it's definitely coming back.  Can't say if that means the replacement screen had the same flaw as the previous one, or if there is some other underlying issue making the screens fail.

Hi, LeoLaw:

If it is ture that OLED driver IC reliability issue cause screen abnormal,

there are still high risk, higher failure rate than other products, after relpacing new OLED module.

i guess that Lenovo known this issue after X1 yoga 1st gen mass feedback screen issue, there is no OLED version in X1 yoga 3rd gen.

I like how they are treating this as a non-issue when I called and lied to me this there has been no recorded cases... And this thread also has pretty high replies within the "ThinkPad: X Series Laptop" category. Is the management so ignorant of the malpractice of its business? I personally think that they are really deceptive to have a screen that had an inherent issue released to the market and then place the burden of the fix on the end-user.

This is just plain wrong. If an airbag is faulty, it doesn't matter if the car is in warranty or not. Admit the issue, apologize and fix it.

the reliability issue only can enhanced by time pass,

weeks? months? years? decades? who knows?

Unfortunately, in my case, it is only around one year.

Same issue here.  It first started up ~5 months after purchase, I sent it back and Lenovo replaced the display under warranty.  It was fine then for another ~5 months when it started doing it again.  I sent it back and Lenovo replaced the MB and the display under warranty.  It was fine then for another ~5 months when it started doing it again.  I'm now out of warranty and Lenovo refuses to do anything about it.

Hi guys, are your machines under warranty or did you purchase an extended warranty? I can tell you what lenovo did for me and they should eable to do the same for you as it's their policy. Regular customer support will just run you aroundbecuse they don't have any OLED displays and are discontinued. So if they replace yours it will be a used one. You mores than like have received an email saying the part is back ordered.

My X1 2nd Oled was replaced with a brand new X1 3rd gen with all the options. I can tell you the display is better than the Oled (I did side by side comparision as they shipped the new first and I shipped mine back).

Also I have a brand new (never used) X1 2nd gen OLED 512SSD, 16gb RAM, SIM slot, loaded w 3 yr NBD on site w accidental coverage I'm selling if interested.

If you like send me a private message and I can tell you what to do.

George

If you have Windows 10 installed, try out the latest drivers from the Intel site and see if it resolves the Flicker issue:

6th Generation Intel® Core™ processors with Intel® HD Graphics 520/530

Version: 25.20.100.6373 – New Version release and not available in Lenovo Site.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28289/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10?product=88192

This will not resolve the issue with the faulty display where there is a green bar across the base of the display.

One of the fixes listed in the release notes is:

"Screen may flicker at low brightness levels in certain panels when DPST is enabled"

This is an isue with the display itself. I went into great detail with senior management. It's the reason they stopped making them and do have any on order to replace them. You more than likely received a notice saying the part is on back order without a real completion date.

Drivers may give a temporary fix as will playing with the brightness though you shouldn't have to do that.

Since they can't replace it with the same display they will replace it witha 3rd gen with the same options and the new top of the lince screen which is actually better.  Especially the battery life. I'm getting over 7 hours.

For those who are just out of warranty, another user suggested checking with your credit card company - most provide 12 months additional warranty coverage if you used a CC to purchase the laptop.  There will be hoops to jump through, but still a good thing to know about.

As for the 3rd Gen screen . . . am I the only one who doesn't think it looks better at all??  Viewing angles are nowhere near as good as the OLED (yes I'm looking at the DolbyVision version, not the base model).  It just doesn't look as good to me.  Bummer that the OLEDs have so many issues.
