Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

I don't think the HDR screen is even close to the OLED with respect to contrast. I love the black blacks and how the colors pop. I'd be very unhappy having to switch to the gen 3 HDR screen.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

I felt exactly the same way about the OLED. I didn't want to give it up but when I compared the 3rd gen against the 2nd gen it was a no brainer. They made so many changes and improvements.

I also have an OLED 2nd gen with every option and compared it with the 3rd gen they sent me and it's hard to tell a large difference. The blacks are a bit darker but that's really it. The HDR is much brighter and less glare. The system is quieter, faster and battery life is great.

For me it was the right decision. A brand new loaded X1 3rd gen and a new warranty.

I found this claim very discouraging, and was about to either give up, or appeal for a warranty extension through our credit card, BUT

Do NOT give up.  Check out

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-Carbon-X1-Yoga-2nd-Generation-OLED-2017-screen/m-p/4192865#M89823

which had a very experienced user hypothesizing that the problem was software -- and having luck with a 'hopeless' laptop working perfectly again, when retreating to an earlier BIOS.  And then continuing to work, with a later BIOS.

On our Thinkpad X1 Yoga from two years ago, for which raising brightness had extended the life some but the flicker was no longer going away, I updated to:

* latest Intel 520 graphics driver

   (6th Generation Intel® Core™ processors with Intel® HD Graphics 520/530

Version: 25.20.100.6373 – New Version release and not available in Lenovo Site.  [10/31/2018]

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28289/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10?product=88192)

* latest BIOS (using Vantage), moved from 1.33 to 1.39.

* updated Lenova OLED monitor driver.   11/9/2018  , v 6.10.0.0

The flicker was better but still didn't look good, until ... in a last desperate tweak, I lowered the brightness back to a reasonable level, and .. hey presto, the display looked as good as when it first arrived.

So it's possible that just one of those changes latest Intel driver OR BIOS might have sufficed, in combination with lowering the brightness.  But why not update them all?  Certinly easier than wiping the system clean, which is how the forum's poster above got lucky.

I hope others "get lucky" by doing updates.  These laptops are beautiful when working properly!

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

So I want to give credit where credit is due. Back in September 2018, the screen flickering issue started appearing on my X1 gen2 1 month after the warranty had expired. I made numerous posts (mostly complaints) here and contacted Lenovo support multiple time in the hopes of remediating the issue. They finally took the machine early in January because of the OLED screen shortage and replaced the screen for me with no cost. It was my persistence (mostly nagging) that finally broke them down and accepted my request.

So don't give up people! I am using the laptop again and it has been flawless ever since (well, sometimes I need to close the lid and reopen it in order to "wake" the computer again. Not even pressing the power on button worked), so it has proven to me that this is definitely a hardware issue! I love the OLED screen, and I understand that the issue may resurface again in a year or so. Until then, I will enjoy watching 4K Netflix/Youtube video on this beautiful screen.

But during the whole process, I did buy a MBP because I was at the verge of giving up on Lenovo support. But then they did it, eventually. It was a nauseous experience with emails not getting replied from Lenovo Support, and the feeling of being sucked into a black hole without any hopes. I am still hesitant to purchase another Lenovo laptop in the foreseeable future after all these fiascos, and I sincerely hope that we all can learn something from this series of events: QA for the engineer, timely response from the Lenovo Support team, and an up-to-date inventory management for the supply chain department (I was told at some points on the phone that they couldn't even tell me if the screen is in stock...sounds like something that Watson can help....).

TL:DR: I am glad that there is a happy ending for my case. I hope the issue has gone away after you have replaced yours. It would be a loss to retire the OLED display as there are no other laptops that adopt this technology in the market.

After 6 mths the vertical distortion multi coloured lines has returned. I called in and they will send me a box for return.

My machine was purcahsed Nov 2017. I got the extended warranty until Dec 2020.

Today was 3rd return request. First was last July, 2nd was Aug. It is now clear all they did was tweak the settings.

They may do the same useless thing again for the 3rd time or really fix the source of the issue.

1. How will I know if they actually replace the screen ?

2. How many return request will they entertain ?

It's all becoming a farce to me. I look forward to after Dec 2020 to buy another laptop other than Lenovo.

It does necessary to figure out a method to check some sort of id of the screen to see whether fixer would replace the screen in this situation.

I haven't read the entire thread but the "solution" to replace screen seemed a bit extreme to me.

So if anyone still has this problem with flickering, here's what worked for me:

1. Make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers installed

2. Right-click on the desktop and click on 'Intel Graphics Settings' to open the HD Graphics Control Panel

3. Select 'Power'

4. Under 'Change Settings for the Plan' you'll see 'Panel Self-Refresh'; it will likely be set to 'Enable'. Select 'Disable' , then 'Apply' at the bottom right.

5. Prosper.

Full credit goes to the post I've found on reddit here.

PSR has been talked about before in this same thread, it doesn't fix the problem, it just changes the behavior of the panel temporarily.  It might help with the little subtle annoyance flickering, but the big flickering that makes the system unusable is unaffected.  Linux doesn't even have PSR enabled by default, and it suffers from the same flickering problem on these laptops.

Good to know, i'm lucky I haven't experienced any major flickering yet, so that's why I thought it solved the problem. Thanks for clarification.
