Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

2018-02-28, 23:07 PM

I'm thinking that we may be seeing two different types of flickering on this thread. One is the kind shown in the video, for example, in the first message of this thread, where the flickering is extreme with flashes of bright white, and the other kind is a subtle flickering that can be fixed by disabling panel self-refresh in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel.

I was able to reproduce and eliminate the subtle flickering problem by toggling panel self-refresh, as others have found. However, that seems to have no effect on the severe flickering. Also, the severe flickering seems to depend on other factors, perhaps temperature, as sometimes I get no flickering when I first turn on the machine, and then after it's  on for a few hours, the flickering at the lowest and sometimes 2nd-lowest setting is quite severe. Lenovo replaced my system board (1st Gen X1 Yoga OLED) and the cable assembly between the system board and the screen, but that did not resolve this issue. Apparently OLED replacement displays are going to be out of stock for several months, so I'm getting a different machine with an LCD screen under warranty replacement, and I'll send the flickering OLED machine back to Lenovo.

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

Hi,

I have a new Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd Gen  (model 20JDCTO1WW) and I have recently noticed that when I turn on my computer (and it is plugged in) that the OLED screen will flicker for a while (see video).

I have run all the hardward tests (no isssues), and updated every driver available (no solution), so I am very confused as to why this is happening. Only solution is to "unplug" the power and run on battery mode...which fixes the flickering instantly. So is this hardware or software???

I called lenovo tech support, but they will not help me unless I pay upfront to speak to someone (my 3 yr warranty only covers Hardware).

This seems to be a very real problem, but I can't figure out who has really fixed it. Please help me someone...you are my only hope!!! LOL

I have the exact same issue.  Flickering occurs on low brightness regardless of whether plugged in or not.  Were you able to get this solved?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

My OLED equipped Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen is also affected by severe flickering at lower display brightness levels. The problem seems to be getting worse where the flickering occurs on the 4 lowest brightness settings whereas it used to occur only on the 2 lowest. It's now at the point where I can not comfortably use it under low ambient light conditions.

Battery or plugged in, warm or cold, makes no difference. I still have a couple of months of warranty left and have next day service so I'm going to see if I can get the screen replaced relatively painlessly. Along with the major hit to battery life, I've really come to regret choosing the OLED option!

Had the same issue, but luckily my warranty still covered the OLED touch screen. Had it replaced very quickly and easily by Lenovo, and now it has been working great again. I too had second thoughts about OLED after the defective screen, and the fact that the new X1 Yogas' don't have the OLED option anymore is concerning. However, now it is working again....so sweet! If I get another year out this screen then maybe still worth the hassle.

Probably just a driver issue. I've left mine alone without any repair, and after a recent driver update offered by Windows 10's update, the flickering at lowest brightness level is completely gone.

I am not sure which patch addressed the issue, because I rarely run it at the lowest brightness. It's probably:

Intel Corporation - SoftwareComponent - 3/12/2018 12:00:00 AM - 1.9.106.43403

or probably something else.

Even though I did not have the flickering issue on a Linux Live System (... so I suspected a drivers issue), replacing the OLED screen did the trick for me. No more flickering on Windows with the new panel.

This helped me too

I have the same problem. Noticed it the first time yesterday. The screen is only flickering at low brightness when charging. All updates are installed from w10 and Lenovo Vantage. Also, the flickering is gone as long as Intel Graphics settings programm is open. This thread should not be marked as solved!

My issue is similar.  It happens almost like clockwork when the brightness is close to 40% or below. Both when charging or on battery.  I think that most people have the screen changed.  I recommend you do this before warranty is out.
