Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd gen) Fingerprint not working

2019-03-29, 15:12 PM

I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen). The fingerprint sensor is not working and I don't have the option to sign in with my fingerprint.

I bought the laptop around a year ago and the fingerprint sensor worked fine for the first few months, but stopped working recently.

Here are the symptoms:

  • When setting up sign-in options, there is no fingerpring option in Windows Hello
  • In the device manager, there is no entry for "biometric sensor" or anything similar
  • In the bios, when I selected "reset fingerprint data", I get the response "no fingerprint reader is attached"

I have tried a full re-install of Windows 10 and it did not change anything.

Is anyone else having similar issues? Is this something I can fix through software or would I have to send it in for servicing?

Thank!

You're not alone, and unfortunately it's been identified as a hardware issue. The BIOS message that you got is actually being used as a confirmation that the problem is hardware, not software. See this thread

According to Lenovo employee Someotherguy, if you can't reset fingerprint in BIOS its a hardware problem.  See below.

Thanks you for the reply.

So would my best option be to send the laptpop to Lenovo for service?

Yes.  I would call support.  They can see if it's a bad cable or bad sensor or bad something else.

My machine started giving me the same problem and I discovered if I knock (like on a door) to the right of the sensor I can then access via fingerprint! Maybe it was part of the SW updates they forgot to document :P

In Device Manager I can see under Biometric Devices that Synaptics WBDI has a problem and with a knock it changes status to good.

It is not due to the failure of the fingerprinter sensor, but due to the failure of the FPC connected between the mother board and the fingerprint sensor.

See the photo of X1Y3 base misc kit, the FPC for the fingerprint sensor is folded too many times, and the folding locations are too close, that's why it fails.

This is a common problem for X1Y3.

If it is under warranty, call Lenovo and ask them replace both the finger print sensor and the FPC.

If it is not under warranty, go to encompass.com, and buy Lenovo FRU 01AY966 (base misc kit). and replace the FPC by yourself.
