Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Hi,

Since I brought the laptop I have always had an issue with fixing the screen brightness. The meter would change on pressing the buttens but not screen brightness. Now, (may be after some automatic updates) my screen is completely off - I get a full black screen. I am able to access my laptop screen by connecting an external monitor and duplicating my screen.

I have tried to reset the computer using recovery options but even that doesn't work. What should I do?

Thank you,

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Hi Rajat,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you are facing issue black screen issue in your ThinkPad X1 Yoga.

In response to customer reports this issue Lenovo released an update. First uninstall the Display drivers completely and make sure it is VGA driver under Display Adapter.

After that install the Display drivers from here following this method.

Device Manager > Display Adapter> Choose to 'Update driver'>Browse my computer>Let me pick from list>Have disk>Now just goto the path where you have extracted the Graphics subfolder and choose the "igdlh64.inf"

Click OK & driver will get installed.

Once you have installed this driver you need to apply the update which is mentioned above.

Also make sure that you restart the system after installing the patch.

Do let us know how it goes.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

How do I "uninstall the Display drivers completely and make sure it is VGA driver under Display Adapter" precisely?

Till now, I have tried going into the "uninstall program" and uninstalled Intel Graphics Driver. What else do I need to do to completely uninstall display drivers and come on VGA driver?

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Hello again,

Sorry if I was not precise enough for you to understand. To uninstall the Display drivers please follow below steps:

Open Device Manager

  • Right Click on Intel HD Graphics 520 under Display Adapters
  • Then click on Uninstall, you will get the pop up with check box Delete the driver Software for this device, tick on that.
  • And click OK for uninstallation. After that you can confirm from Programs & Features for Intel Display Drivers whether its uninstalled from there or not.

If everything goes well after restarting the system there should Microsoft Basic Display Adapter under Display Adapter in Device Manager.

So once the above steps are done you can follow the installation process from previous reply.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Hi, thanks for a prompt reply.

I carry out the above steps, and when I restart I do get "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter under Display Adapter in Device Manager." Also, my blank laptop screen starts working. However, within few minutes the Intel Graphics driver gets reinstalled automatically. How do I prevent this?

Thanks,

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Well if that's the case there are two methods to move further & really appreciate your patience.

Method -1

  • Open Control Panel > Device and Printers
  • Then choose your system (eg LENOVO) under Devices & right click on that to choose Device installation Settings
  • Choose No from the popup box and Click on Save Changes
  • The above mentioned steps will prevent your system from updating the drivers automatically from Internet.

Method -2

  • Or Just Open Display Adapter from Device Manager again & click on Update driver> Choose to 'Update driver'>Browse my computer>Let me pick from list then select Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and click next to install that driver. (Don't restart your system)
  • Once done double check whether any traces for Intel Display driver are there or not from Programs & Features.

Then follow the rest of the steps from previous reply.

Do let us know how it goes!

Prabhansh

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Thanks! Prabhansh for all the help. Both the methods didn't work. I instead just disconnected my computer from the internet and the Intel Display Driver didn't install automatically.

The new display driver fixed the problem. However, when installing the patch (or the update) it said that the folder "DRIVER/PANEL" already exists. I don't think the patch got installed. Is this a problem?

My laptop display works, but I want to ensure that I have installed the patch too.

Thanks!

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Actually sometime it has to be done it quickly or else it will keep on installing the drivers from temp file or from driver repository folder.

You have done well Smiley Happy to disconnect the system from Network to resolve that part.

As far as patch is concerned it was released 8 months back so chances are there it was already installed in your system  & key here is to restart the system & then look for Display drivers update.

If you have difficulties you can go through this readme for patch installation

Cheers

Prabhansh

Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga Display Problem - blank screen

Hi - rather than crash this thread I created a new post here.  I am having the same problem and the 'fix' has indeed restored functionality, in my post I'm hoping to understand root cause.

Thanks - Tim
