Thinkpad X1 extreme FHD only 6 hours battery life

2018-11-23, 6:14 AM

Just gotten the X1 extreme and quite disappointed to know the battery lasted merely 6 hours +/-, battery saver mode and screen 56% brighteness and was mainly browising the website and word documents. Contacted the support and was told 6 hours is normal. The presales told me 9 - 12hours.

Other specs details:-

i7-8850, 16Gb ram, 1TB SSD.

Wondering if anyone else is have a X1 Extreme FHD display and getting the miserable 6 hours battery life?

Hi coldbolt,

Yes, I have the X1 Extreme FHD and was getting even less battery life before I followed the instructions in this post:

You cannot keep it disabled; that will increase battery drain as well. There are a lot of bugs here that Lenovo needs to address.

So, after disabling and reenabling the Nvidia card, my X1 Extreme starts showing around 4.5 hours of battery remaining. I have a 4K screen at 100% brightness with i7-8850H CPU running under "Better Performance" power mode. The battery remaining indicator jumps around depending on the usage but I timed it several times and getting around 4 hours of use. Is this normal?

Personally, I don't know. However, it is a large, high DPI display driving 400+ nits. At full brightness, I'd bet on the panel dwarfing the light/idle power draw of the CPU + IGP + Nvidia + WiFi combined. Notebookcheck, which runs their WiFi and their Video playback tests at 150nits, can only get a bit over 6 hours. Something like playing back a youtube video over wifi will lower that runtime even further.

The screen is the next frontier when it comes to laptop power draw savings.

I have an X1E with i7 8750H FHD. After BIOS 1.10 update, I didn't have to mannually disable GTX 1050ti to get good battery life for web browsing (around 8-10 hours with battery safer on and 30% brightness). After BIOS 1.17 update, I am getting horrible battery life (about  5 hours of browsing with battery safer on and 30% brightness). Granted I added another 16gig ram (OEM, same model as the one already on my machine) for dual channelling, the battery life should not be this bad.  I noticed that the integrated GPU is being used at 5%-15% even when there is no video playing.

I think something in BIOS 1.17 update is causing battery drain. Is it safe to manually download BIOS 1.10 and roll back?
