Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 8 heat issue?

2020-08-09, 8:59 AM

10 days ago I received my new X1 carbon gen 8 (20U90008MX), upgrading from the 6th gen.

The 6th gen had the i7-8550U processor, and the new one have the i7-10510U processor.

My new laptop is generating significantly more heat, and the fan is on almost all the time. The area between the speakers is so hot that I can burn my fingers.

The processor is only using a few percents of it's power, and I'm not running any heavy programs.

Is this normal?

Same here, I also notice this.

Looking at Windows Event Viewer I constantly see errors like this:

ESIF(8.7.10200.12510) TYPE: ERROR MODULE: DPTF TIME 14180063 ms

DPTF Build Version:  8.7.10200.12510

DPTF Build Date:  Nov  5 2019 18:36:19

Source File:  c:\jenkins\workspace\dptf\src\dptf\sources\unifiedparticipant\arbitratortemperaturethresholds.cpp @ line 210

Executing Function:  ArbitratorTemperatureThresholds::throwIfTemperatureThresholdsInvalid

Message:  Received invalid temperature thresholds from policy.

Policy Index = 1

Current Temperature = 13.3

Requested Aux0/Aux1 = 15.4/X

Current Hysteresis = 2.0

DPTF is Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework, so I thought this could be related. Are you seeing the same?

Re:Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 8 heat issue?

I have the identical problem, after just yesterday starting up my brand spanky-new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 8,

and (note) AFTER having already gone to Lenovo and performed the initial driver update (though I may have to re-visit it

and try again, in case there are some dependency issues that impact getting ALL the up-to-date drivers).  It looks as if a

developer was a bit sloppy in specifying a local path (C:\jenkins\workspace\...) in the code during development:

I was reporting a driver update that potentially fixes the issues but unfortunately it didn't :-(

Same Windows error reporting for me also.  I've been comparing my 6th gen to the new 8th gen and felt the fan was constantly running, possibly related issue to this or maybe just coincident.

Where in the Event Viewer do you see this error?
