Re:Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 8 heat issue?

2020-09-08, 15:10 PM

Hi Jan Tore,

I currently have the same problem with my X1 7th Gen.

What are your Bios power settings?

Check my post on the Lenovo forum for steps you could try:

Re:Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 8 heat issue?

I also have an X1 Carbon Gen 8 (with i5-10310U CPU @ 1.70GHz) running Windows 10 Pro (version 10.0.18363 Build 18363).  All drivers are up-to-date.

I am also seeing the same DPTF error (with Event ID 17) in my Event Viewer pretty much every 5 to 10 minutes all day long.  Laptop seems to run hotter than my previous X1 Carbon, too.

Any suggestions, Lenovo???

I have a premier support case open for weeks now. Lenovo offered to replace the fan (which is obviously working fine). I asked for driver updates with fixes but nothing was provided yet.

Hi,

There is a fix available on the Lenovo website since the the 7th of October (it seems Lenovo Vantage is not pushing it) according to this post.

According to my own experience, after the installation last week no more error logs shown in the event viewer.

Thanks @BoHX the error message is fixed now, however the behavior described in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/ThinkPad-X1-Gen-8-heating-problems/m-p/5030371?page=1 remains the same. When connected to a power device, the fan is always on and the device is still heating up.

For sure, it only fixes the error in the event viewer, nothing more.

For the heating issue, as discussed in this thread, the reason is the CPU stays in Turbo mode probably because of a faulty driver.

To mitigate it, you can switch to Balanced Mode instead of Automatic Mode via the Fn+T shortcut or limit the max frequency of the CPU as described in the same thread. You can also disable/enable a device in the device manager as I also mentioned in the same thread.

Good luck :)
