Thinkpad X220 clean install troubles (Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool)

2012-08-17, 5:09 AM

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been answered prior (I've searched through the forums for viable solutions).

I decided to format my hard drive on my Lenovo Thinkpad X220 laptop and perform a clean install of Windows.

Since my laptop lacks a CD drive, I proceeded to download a Windows 7 Professional .iso file in hopes of using it as a

bootable USB tool.

Extracted the .iso file to the USB, went in BIOS and selected the USB, but to no avail.

Decided to download the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool exe with the .iso file I still had, but ended up receiving this prompt:

1yTbQ.png

After a bit of googling, apparently there's a bypass to this by switching the .iso file to UDT (however the .iso file I had was already listed as UDT).

If anyone has had any experiences with this, I would love to hear your feedback or advice.

did the site you got the iso from list an md5 checksum? if so, you may with to check your download file to rule out a corrupt file. i've never used the microsoft tool you're trying, but the bit i read about seems to indicate that all you need is the iso, a suitable usb stick and the app. since it's complaining about the iso, i'd check its validity.

sorry if you've already done all of this...

Hello,

I downloaded the Windows 7 Profesional SP1 x64 .ISO from Microsoft and used the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool to create a bootable USB flash drive for a clean install of Windows 7, just as you did, several weeks ago.  I had no problems making the flash drive or installing Windows 7, so I suspect it was a bad download.

I suspected the same, but I guess we'll see after I download another .iso.

I'm grateful for the feedback, thanks to you both! I'll try to update soon.

Update 1: So I downloaded another .iso file, but it must have been corrupt as well since I ended up with the same prompt.

Do you guys mind if you re-direct me to another valid .iso file for Windows 7 Professional x64?

Thanks, will update.

Hey MrDongji,

Just wanted to ask if you were downloading them from the Microsoft site or a third party? For example this link:

Best Regards,

Hiro

Hi Hiro,

I believe I downloaded both .iso files from this website here which has the same links.

Looks like the .iso files were corrupted (I've heard some people had to re-download sometimes).

I looked for alternatives and ended up finding one that worked.

Thanks for the help.
