Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

2014-07-15, 14:22 PM

Hi All,

I have an X230 with 16GB RAM and am aware that the documented maximum is 16GB.

The processor however does support upto 32GB;

http://ark.intel.com/products/64896/Intel-Core-i5-3320M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz

Does anyone know if this will work (unsupported), or know of any technical reasons not to go beyond 16GB?

I'm struggling to run my home lab on 16GB and desperately need a solution for additional RAM without buying a new W series system.

Thanks,

Jon

Welcome Jon!

The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.

However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.

Hope this answers your question.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the feedback / confirmation.

I guess I'll have to find another solution - ie. new hardware :(

Kind Regards,

Jon

Hello,

The ThinkPad X230 was released in 2012.  DDR4 memory did not appear until 2014, and those first memory modules were designed for Intel Xeon workstation CPUs, not laptops.  It took another couple of years for the technology to become available in laptops.  In the case of the ThinkPad X-series, the X260, which was released in 2016.

Re:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

I am currently using a Thinkpad X230 (Core i5 3320M) with 16GB ram in 2020. I am interested in using 2X16GB (DDR3 204 pin, 12800, 1600MHz) ram (which is currently available in 2020). Since the processor supports this type of RAM.

Will my X230 will support 32GB now in 2020 with the above configuration of RAM?

Did you find a way to use the 32g? Did it work?

DDR3-1600 SO-DIMM 16GB have been available for a couple of years but it came out well after the X230 hit the street

I have only got 4GB and 8GB sticks so far. Running Linux on the X230 hardly uses the 8GB installed on it now.

I own: T400 T500 X220 running Windows 10 x64 & My X230 runs Linux for my webserver
