Thinkpad X230 laptop Adding RAM?

2020-02-05, 15:44 PM

Hello,

I have an older Thinkpad x230 - put into service in July 2013. I run Windows 7 Home Premium (yes, I know...) and have 4GB RAM in one stick, one empty slot, and a 500 GB hard drive that is about half full. I also use that laptop to run Linux Mint 19.1 from an external USB SSD. I am hoping to continue to use this laptop - with Win 7 (many safeguards in place) and with Linux, but also possibly upgrading to Win 10 down the road, so I am looking for a cost effective solution to extend the life of this machine and speed it up.

My question is about adding a second 4gb RAM stick - not replacing the RAM I have. My specs say it came with one 4gb PC3-12800 DDR3 (1 DIMM) and I would like to add a second if it will help speed the laptop up.

When in Windows, this laptop now is excruciatingly slow - often using about 90% of my resources. It takes about 5 minutes to completely boot, and shut down is slow as well. Browsing is OK, but slows as I open windows. I have used FF and Opera and see little difference in speeds. It is better in Linux, but I still see that about 75% of my available memory is used - 2.8 gb of avvailable 3.6 used, and 14% for the swap.

So first - can I just add an additional 4gb RAM, and will it help with the speed issues? If that is possible, how can I tell what a compatible RAM stick would be? I have looked at Crucial, which lists several that tye say are compatible with the machine, but it is not clear what might be compatible with the RAM I now have. They tell me one DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • is what they call single rank and the other - same specs, but more $$ is double rank. I am not sure which - if either - would be the right one.

If adding a stick is not possible, they also offer matched 4gb sticks, but again, the single and double rank is a question. Or would I be better replaing the 4gb with one 8 gb?

I appreciate any help in getting this sorted. I am resistant to buying a new laptop right now, and I think this x230 is still in good working order and would perform better with the additional RAM - just not sure which would be the right one or right way to go - add or replace?

Thanks!

Hi HLily1! The device can upgrade to Windows 10 however it will only be up to Windows 10 1507 version or build. You can refer to this link: https://support.lenovo.com/eg/en/solutions/ht103535.

Base on the product specification, you can upgrade up to 16 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 and you can check it here: http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/withdrawnbook/ThinkPad_X230.pdf.

You can find the tested compatible parts here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/eg/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x230/2306/parts/display/compatible . You can refer to the photo below.

Yes you can keep it because base on the product reference, it has two memory slot. The second slot is for additonal memory. I hope that answers your question.

Yes - thanks! I really didn't want to have to buy more than I need, so knowing I can just add 4gb is great news!

Thanks so much!

And just one other question - about that single or dual rank. If I don't know what the RAM in the laptop is - single or dual - which would be a better choice to add that additional 4gb?

Thanks!

Ranking doesn't significantly affect the performance. Base on the certified compatible RAMs on your machine are dual.

Thanks! So I guess going with dual would be the right way to do it?

Thanks for the help! :-)
