Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

Hello,

My x270 (20K6) has a broken motherboard.  I have found one on ebay (20HM).

My 20K6 has the Sierra EM7455 Card which works great.

Does anyone know if the 20HM is also compatible (whitelist, etc) with this card?

Having a very difficult time answering this question using the lenovo websites.  It looks like they are recommending the Fibocom L831-EAU.

Thanks for any light anyone can shed - appreciated.

Re: Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

Hi

MT 20K6 is a x270' platform based on Intel CPU 6th Generation, while 20HM is based on 7th Generation.

Despite both platforms use the same UEFI, their wireless devices whitelists differ a bit. But em7455 persists in both wl.

Fibocom L831-EAU will work on 20HM only.

Regarding the choosing between em7455 and L831 the 1st one is more feature rich, more preferable for the USA cellular networks as it supports all LTE networks in almost all frequency bands USA operators work in with minor exceptions. Of course, both modems support 3G networks.
EM7455 supports faster speed, 300 mbps vs 150 mbps L831 has.

Note, you'll need to apply some data in new systemboard. Read the laptop User Guide, the section about UUID.

Re: Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

Thank you for the great reply.

Regarding the UUID data - I did some research on this, and am curious if this is needed if the replacement motherboad is from a used computer vs an OEM replacement.

Am I correct in thinking if this is coming out of another used thinkpad (that had a damaged screen, so owner is selling) that I do not need to perform this step?

Thank you in advance

Re: Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

You're right.

If the OS on your laptop is win7 you'll face a difficulties as, officially, Intel 7th Generations doesn't support it.
