Thinkpad X380 Yoga - Solidworks poor performance - Graphics driver issue?

Hello,

I recently bought a Thinkpad X380 and installed the CAD software Solidworks 2017 on it. I don't expect the laptop to have the performance of a CAD work station, but the performance in Solidworks is so poor that I actually cannot do any simple 3D modelling. I suppose there is a problem with the driver of the Intel UHD 620 graphics card.

I'm currently using driver version 24.20.100.628.

Does anybody have any experience with this issue?

Is there a way to request a driver update from lenovo?

Thank you in advance!

Regards

Sebastian

Re: Thinkpad X380 Yoga - Solidworks poor performance - Graphics driver issue?

Hi,

Same here.

Solidworks doesn't allow to uncheck "Use software OpenGL" which is most probable reason for poor performance.

Seems to be fixed with version 24.20.100.6344 available for X1 yoga 3rd Gen. More details can be found in last post on this site:

https://my.solidworks.com/reader/forumthreads/218593/driver-for-intel-uhd-620

Driver on my i7-8550U X380 Yoga is 24.20.100.6286 which still has these issues.

Lenovo could you please update drivers for X380 as well to make most of our versatile machine?

Thanks and best regards!

Ivan

Dear sebeis,

Forgot to mention that turning "Dynamic higlight from graphics view" (disables orange edge highlight when hovering over face) off improves user experience significantly.

My help you until new driver is released for X380 Smiley Happy

Regards,

Ivan

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone with the problem.

Thanks for the hint with the dynamic highlight. I realized that I actually desactivated it a while ago - runs a little better, but not quite satisfying yet. Let's hope there is gonna be a driver release soon.

Regards

Sebeis

Re: Thinkpad X380 Yoga - Solidworks poor performance - Graphics driver issue?

Hi,

Seems like new driver (version 25.20.100.6472) solved this issue.

Some registry editing is necessary though after which I managed to get decent performance on SW 2018 (this will probably work for older versions as well)

Once driver is updated open registry editor and follow these steps:

  • go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SOLIDWORKS 2018\Performance\Graphics\Hardware\Intel". If working on other SW version go to appropriate key for your version
  • Create key "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 6"
  • In "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 6" create DWORD value named "Workaround" and set it to 0x10000010
  • Create key under "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 6" and name it "V001_FG_X614105256_V815102256"
  • In "V001_FG_X614105256_V815102256" create DWORD value named "Workaround" and set it to 0x4000480
  • Create another key under "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 6" and name it "V002_FG_V815102345"
  • In "V002_FG_V815102345" create DWORD value named "Workaround" and set it to 0x4000080

What I did here is copied all keys and values for HD 6 Intel GPU series and renamed it to for UHD 6 series.

Haven't done much testing but all that I tried so far works without crash. Before new driver arrived I tried same registry mod and got decent performance however on every try to open sketch SW would crash.

I also managed to enable RealView by following instruction on this web site:

https://grabcad.com/tutorials/activate-solidworks-2017-realview-graphics-on-an-intel-cpu

Hope this works for you and others as well.

Regards!

P.S. Lenovo, thanks for updating Intel driver. Really made my day.

Hi iKare,

thank you so much for posting. I didn't really believe anymore that this problem would be solved in the end.

I did as you described and now it seems to work fine! Really happy about this.

Regards,

Seb

Re: Thinkpad X380 Yoga - Solidworks poor performance - Graphics driver issue?

I can confirm your solution on my ThinkPad X380 Yoga (20LH000NGE) using the Intel UHD Graphics 620.

  • Solidworks 2018 SP0.1 x64 German
  • Windows 10 1809 17763.474 German
  • Graphics Driver v25.20.100.6472

Please note, the Registry Keys here were named "Workarounds", not "Workaround". Thanks to your note that these are just copied values I was able to find this quickly.

OpenGL is now working, this fixes the annoying orange lines issues and allows to deactivate Software OpenGL. Solidworks 2018 now runs like a charm. Thanks a lot.
