Thinkpad X61 LCD cable brass tab broken

2018-04-26, 11:35 AM

This is my first post so please don't be too hard on me if I get things wrong.

Recently the screen backlight on my X61 went out.

The laptop works fine on an external monitor.

I found a replacement inverter on ebay (new) for three pounds.

When I came to fit it, it did not solve the problem.

But while I was undoing the bracket holding the left hand end of the inverter, I found a small brass half washer which on further investigation I found had broken off a small branch of the LCD cable situated between the main LCD cable and the inverter cable.

I found a replacement cable on ebay but it has the same problem as mine so I declined to buy it.

I have used one of the pictures from ebay to illustrate the area of interest and a freehand representation of the part that broke off.

I am 100% sure that I did not break it when replacing the inverter.

It seems to me that this tab is subject to a lot of flexing when opening and closing the lid of the laptop and so may be a common problem.

My question is  (before I spend any more money on another possible red herring):

Does anyone know if this "small branch" of the LCD cable has any bearing on the backlight operation?

Thanks in anticipation
