Thinkpad Yoga X1 1st Gen 20FR BIOS Recovery Mode

2021-05-25, 19:25 PM

Hi,

I have a Lenovo Yoga X1 1st Generation 20FR.

It appears that I have an issue with version 1.38 of the bios which causes a slow boot, the pc will not shut down or perform bios updates.

I get errors due to an issue with the Intel MEI/AMT (HECI ERRORS).

Looking at various support groups, it suggests that the portion in the bios could have become corrupt and a bios update may resolve this.

As I cannot perform a bios update using the normal methods, I have discovered other Lenovo models offer a BIOS Recovery mode (Fn R or Fn B) at boot up and a bootable usb disk.

Does this work on thinkpad Yoga X1 as a BIOS recovery may resolve my issues if it works on a Thinkpad?

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you trying to run the BIOS update from Windows when you get the errors or do you also get errors when using bootable media?

The readme for BIOS 1.48 includes instructions for making a bootable flash dive using the exe file, perhaps on another machine.

A word of caution: BIOS or firmware updates on an unstable machine are risky.

Hi,Thanks for the info. I have seen that but wanted to confirm if the Fn + R or Fn + B features work.

I tried the batch file to create the usb key.

I Formatted a usb key to Fat32 and upon normal bootup on the USB Key I get a msg An Operating system was not found Try disconnecting any drives ...

My actions so far:

Building a USB firmware update key as per instructions went okay but get an error message of no OS. I suspect that I need a smaller USB key. The smallest I hadwas 2gb and this still failed.

My firmware is currently 1.37. I tried a downgrade to 1.31 from a CD as it had the Intel Management Engine 1.7 but this failed the same as the others with the pc going to sleep (Flashing power button) and after restart get the Secure Flash Authentication failed message.

I need some way of forcing a reflash to resolve the bios issue.

Disable secure boot

Allow Bios downgrade in Bios settings

Simon

It never worked for me, I assume it doesn’t work on Thinkpads (unless someone can confirm it does)
