The X1 carbon 6th Gen supports Thunderbolt 3, yet it is not listed as compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2. Anyone have an idea why? Also the ThinkPad T470s.
The X1 Yoga 3rd Gen and X1 Yoga 2nd Gen are listed as compatible. Perhaps it just means that the dock has been specifically tested with the listed models? Surely Thunderbolt 3 is Thunderbolt 3 and the dock should work with plenty of other Thunderbolt 3 machines?

I purchased the "40AN" Thunderbolt 3 Dock you mention and it works perfectly in Windows 10. It even charges my X1C6 laptop through the TB3 connection. Using it in Ubuntu 18.10 as well. Just trying to figure out a 4K HDMI issue which is Linux related since it works fine in Windows 10
At the time Lenovo didn't have the "Gen 2" in stock, so I got the "Workstation" version and bought a belkin 40Gb/100W 0.5M TB3 cable since only the combo X1E cable that comes with the package does not fit. So now I use the "Workstation" 230W power supply instead of the "Gen 2" 135W

I do hope to see some updates to compatibility info. We've got about 100 docks in house and the Thunderbolt dock (1st gen, 40AC) has been greatly appreciated. I also noted the Gen2 model coming up and I thought to check in on compatibility.
Let's start with the Gen1:
- https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/acc100356 notes compatibility with X1 Carbon 5th, but not 6th
- https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/accs-guide OCM (excel file) says exactly the opposite to this
And the Gen2 doesn't seem to be compatible with any Carbon models, according to either spec sheet. It's marked compatible with X1 Yoga 2nd and 3rd generations, which are very, very closely similar to X1 Carbon 5th and 6th and use the same Gen1 docks just fine. Same CPU, GPU, connectors...
I'd very much appreciate Lenovo looking into the compatibility documentation. When people move around from office to office, a quality docking solution is paramount. We can't update every laptop at once.

I completely agree that Lenovo needs to update all the docs on the TB3 Docks. Here is my own research when I bought my dock.
There are technically 3 Thunderbolt 3 "Brick type" docks in the Lenovo lineup. The other type being the "Port Replicator" type.
All 3 "should" work with the X1C6 or any other TB3 Lenovo laptop. The only uncertain is if they can charge over TB3.
(1) - G0A1 a.k.a. "Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock" This is Lenovo's eGPU option.
Says it's only for IdeaPad 720S, but many have found it to work with other laptops. Comes with 170W adapter. eGPU is GTX1050
(2) - 40AC a.k.a. "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock" This is referred to as Gen 1
Comes with 135W adapter. Should work with X1C6. I didn't get it because it has VGA and only 1 HDMI which maxs out at 30Hz @ 4K res
(3) - 40AN a.k.a. "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2" AND "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock" This is referred to as Gen 2
Lenovo made a mess with this offering by putting out 3 variations of it. The actual dock "03X7538" is the same across all of them.
I got this variant because it had more display ports and the HDMI does 4K @ 60hz
The is the "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2" which comes with 135W adapter and will work with X1C6, even though it doesn't state it.
This is the "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock" which comes in TWO variants, the 170W and the 230W adapters. These will also work with the X1C6 BUT you need to purchase a separate *good* "Passive TB3 USB-C 40GB 5A" cable, as the cable in this kit is for the X1E and P1/P52 laptops. It's a combined square power and USB-C connecter. Then just plug the 170W or the 230W adapter in where the Gen 2 documents show the 135W adapter plugging in and you don't need the second 65W adapter, so store it in the box or use it elsewhere.
Hope this clears up some confusion.

This page details all working conditions of docks and number of monitors. It might be helpful to those further researching this thread as I am.

"40AN a.k.a. "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2"
I can report that TB charging DOES work on X1C6g using the above dock.
From your post I bought this dock and installed it 01Apr2019 and it works flawlessly so far. Thanks for your guidance and hopefully this post clears up any confusion for other X1C6g owners seeking to deploy and use this dock.

I can also report that 40AN ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 works well with my X1 Carbon 6th Gen.
