Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Just got purchased the x1 carbon 5th gen along with the Thunderbolt 3 dock.  However, the dock will not charge the laptop.  Every time I get the error message "The dock is not supplying enough power to your computer.  Please use the ac power adapter that came with the dock".  I am, in fact, using the ac adapter that came with the docking station.  I have updated the bios as well as all of the other recommended updates and still get the same error message.  Does anyone have a solution?

I have the same problem.  I have not updated bios or anything.  just got docking station yesterday.  only other items plugged into docking station are 2 displayport connected monitors (which are separately powered).

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

It will say on the power adapter rather than the dock; either directly as 65W/90W or by multiplying the  output voltage by the output current.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Did you connect the Laptop with the Thunderbolt connector on the backside of the Dock (beside the HDMI/DP connectors)?

The front Thunderbolt does not supply enough power.

Best regards

Klaus

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Thank you!! That solved it.  I assumed the front connector was for the laptop / would supply the same power as other thunderbolt ports.  It doesn't look pretty now with the cord curled from the back -- but it works!

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Yeah and the cord is way too short from the back. The only TB3 ports on the X1C5 is on the left side of the laptop, and yet they put the dock's TB3 port on the back left of the dock and provide a subpar TB3 cable length wise.

Can't put the dock behind the laptop on the right cuz cable simply wont reach, but if you put it on the left the cable is way too short. This is just bad design, I understand longer TB3 cables cost significantly more to produce, but you should've thought of that when you put the dock's TB3 port on the the rear left, Lenovo.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Sorry, this did not apply to me. Everything was working on Friday, but when I came in to work on Monday I get this message. Could it be that the power supply has partially failed?

The dock itself works fine. I have two screens attached, mouse and keyboard.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock will not charge X1 Carbon 5th Gen

Ok - I found a solution in another discussion thread. The underlying problem was that the battery wasn't charging.

Solution: Go into the BIOS and "disable the battery for technical service". After the computer shuts down, you plug the computer back in and that was it!
