Thunderbolt Dock Issue - Display cycling on and off - Charging intermittent

I am having an issue with the Thunderbolt 3 dock with my Gen 5 X1 (20HR).

Upon purchasing the correct replacement (Lenovo Recommended)  cable for length reasons. I cannot use the dock. The port one the dock heats up and the cable cycles on and off. Thus giving me undesired results.

I've tried 3 different cables now and still the same results. The computer acts as if I've disconnected and reconnected the cable over and over. Until it is disconnected.

What should we do?

Does it work normally with the original short cable?

Are all of the 3 cables you have tried the same model?

Which Thunderbolt port on the dock are you plugging in to?

The Charge/PC port (Number 14 in manual).

All cables used were active 1 meter cables. Bestbuy brand, Belkin, Etc.

Just did a full system update. Thunderbolt 3 drivers, BIOS etc...

Will update.

The most important question was whether it still works with the original short cable or not. If so, this is a cable problem. If not, this is likely a faulty dock.

Hardly. Anyone can transmit data at 40 Ghz through a 19 inch cable. But compatibity issues across the board on proper active cables would be an/the issue.

It appears that the connector on the dock side gets very hot. Possibly thermally protecting it's self by resetting? Only time will tell I suppose.

Based on what you've described, it sounds like a bad dock.

So, I'm still unclear as to whether this is working for you with the original short cable or not. The unfortunate state we are in is that many/most current Thunderbolt 3 cables are garbage.

I have been successful using both a Plugable 2M passive cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KGTGXQO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and a Startech 2M Active 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9J47EG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with my X1C driving a 4k monitor and a variety of peripherals. If you aren't connecting to an external graphics card or some other device that is specifically TB3, there is little practical difference between the two.

Thus far it is working.

BIOS Ver 1.22 - X1 Carbon (Type 20HQ, 20HR) (Type 20K3, 20K4)

Appears to have addressed the issue. All cables are working, not getting hot, and not cycling the video.

Re: Thunderbolt Dock Issue - Display cycling on and off - Charging intermittent

So what was the final resolution for this?

I have a Thunderbolt 3 with a X1 Carbon 20HR and it is periodically resetting my external displays that are connected via the Thunderbolt 3 dock...

BIOS and such has been updated using Lenovo Vantage.
