While trying to update the thunderbolt firmware update utility, I get the attached error message. It happens every time. Please tell me how to fix this.

We need to update that. Please follow these directions:
1. download this: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1nta05w.exe
2. run it, but at the end, UNCHECK the box about "Install now"
3. Open C:\DRIVERS\WIN\THUNDERBOLT, then double-click on setup.msi to install it
4. follow the on-screen instructions to install the new Thunderbolt software
5. reboot and then try to update the firmware again.
