Touchpad and click doesn't work simultaneously - X1 Carbon (7th gen)

2019-10-04, 6:22 AM

Hi all, this is my first time posting and also my first experience on a Thinkpad (Carbon X1 7th gen). Overall I'm loving it but there is a small issue that bugs me and seriously messes up my workflow.

The issue is that sometimes (about half of the times) when I use the touchpad buttons above the touchpad, the touchpad stops working for a small period of time (about 1/3 second). This might seem like a small issue indeed, but imagine that every time you click your mouse, the mouse pointer stops moving. That would be a faulty mouse and I would return it immediately. This really stops my flow when working with the laptop.

So I'm asking the collective intelligence of this community - is there a way to get the click and touchpad working simultaneously? I have never encountered this issue on any laptop.

Best, Leif

Hi Leif,

The button above of touchpad is not touchpad button but TrackPoint (the red stick) button. Any using of TrackPoint may cause TrackPad temporarily stop working (as you encounter)

X1 Carbon touchpad is a clickable trackpad, and I recommend you to press the touchpad button (by pressing the left bottom area of touchpad/refer the user manual) instead of TrackPoint buttons, to completely avoid your problem. Using touchpad with TrackPoint button is not a recommendation usage.

Hi Mai, but several of us like to use the actual clickable mouse buttons to click and not the touchpad built-in buttons. I'm quite sure this can be solved via a driver update, because the touchpad does not make these pauses when in the BIOS for example. Also the pause/delay also happens when using the touchpad and clicking the built-in buttons, so the point stands.

Thank you for your answer. The problem persists though, because even when I use the touchpad's built in buttons there is still an interaction between the click and the non-responsiveness of the mouse pointer. On the plus side it has moved me to using the trackpoint almost all the time, but I would like to have normal functionality out of my touchpad as well.

Could this be something with Windows precision drivers? Maybe something that could be disabled in regedit (palm-rejection related perhaps)? Who is the manufacturer of the touchpad, could drivers be downloaded directly from the manufacturer?

Best, Leif

Hi Leif, I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the lack of palm rejection settings (or similar function) in the Windows Precision drivers. I've tried editing the Synaptics drivers in the registry to no end. Without luck.

I have the same bad experience. Feels like working with a computer form 1998. Is there any to turn this "feature" off?

This is a bit disappointing, I never had this issue with any of Lenovo ThinkPad before (X240, T440, T440s, T510, etc) But now with the most expensive of the them, I'm facing such bug. There must a solution, and it would great if Lenovo find it quickly.

I switched to the X1C 7th Gen recently and this problem is extremely annoying.
I've tried everything online and always updating to the new BIOS.
This issue must get more attention from the Lenovo Team. We need a fix.

CMaroun, what attempts have you made and failed?

I have tried updating to newest BIOS, disabled palm rejection in regedit (precision drivers), but to no avail. At the BIOS screen this problem does not seem to exist, only in Windows 10. We do indeed need a fix, It's like driving a brand new Tesla, but half of the time you use the gas pedal the steering wheel locks up.

I am still not sure if this is a hardware or a software problem.
I've read every post on this forum and on reddit. No solution.
The Lenovo team must do smthg about it.

And now I read this:

It's happening with X1C8 users as well!
