Re: Trackpoint Drifting X1 Carbon gen 6

Hello Lenovo! Are you listening?! We are doing our own research here, and no response?? We are your most loyal trackpoint supporters. Are you really interested in maintaining a trully innovative solution or are you only interested in checking that box for your coprorate clientele? Why would I spend two to three grand on a laptop that in terms of specs is actually not better than the competition but it's only advantage would be a trackpoint that doesn't work? I'm ready to jump ship!

Yeah, I have a higher end warranty, but I hesitate to call and ask for help with this because I know they will just ask me to send it in and let them replace the MB, which, from all I've seen, will do nothing. And I'll probably end up wth some refurb motherboard.

I just want Lenovo to tell us, yes, we see the problem and we're working on it, and that be true, vs. "why put resources on this vs. newer systems we want to sell."

I have a 3 year warranty with mine. I've complained to support, but not willing to send it in, as from what I can tell, there currently is no fix for this issue.

Since I'm a trackpoint 100% user my laptop is annoying to use and I'd gladly pay for a working replacement so I could actually properly use this machine.

Just want it fixed, don't really care if it costs money.

We need to ask a very important question: "Is there anybody out there who has an X1 Carbon 6th gen using the trackpoint whose trackpoint does not present this issue?" and second question: "Is there anybody out there who managed to get rid of the problem completely by replacing the keyboard?". I have replaced many thinkpads X1C6 and X1Y3 and never got the problem fixed. Bur if one has managed to do so that means there is a series of keyboards which do not present the problem and this is important.

I’ll post here once I get my X1E6 back.  I’ll send it off next week.  I’ve not seen anyone with this issue ever post a fix.  But I have to give’m a chance to fix it before taking further action.

Re: Trackpoint Drifting X1 Carbon gen 6

Have been following this thread for over a year and thought of something.

Mine is drifting less than a year ago. It's still present, but while using it for 6 hours today I only had 1-2 half-bad drifts and maybe 2-4 short drifts. A year ago I would often have several terrible drifts in a short amount of time (making it unusable), but nowadays they are way less frequent and also less severe.

Maybe breaking in the hardware helps? That could explain why getting replacements doesn't help. Just guessing though, have anyone else had a similar experience?

I should open a ticket while I'm still under my three year warranty.  Recently had an overheating issue - got a new motherboard - didn't solve the over heating problem.  Then, got a new battery - that didn't solve the over heating problems.  Nor did the new motherboard help the drifting problem.

I am sorry I do not understand what you mean by "breaking in the hardware".

Yes.  Every ticket you open is registered problem with your machine. WOW!  You have been thru the ringer with the X1E1.  Thermals and thinness do not play well.   If Lenovo would fix the trackpoint issues, I could live with the thermals because I can control and moderate that by using a bamboo lapboard (if needed).  I also do not sit my machine on soft surfaces.  With the older thinkpads, they had engineered side intakes.  Seems these could be on the front now but I'm not a thermal engineer.

There's a cliff after the diminishing returns and our beloved machines may be at that point with these CPUs, GPUs and designs.

Like me, you are a very patient person and loyal Thinkpad(er) I'm guessing.  Maybe things are fixed in the X1C7 (no E yet). I notices they are no longer using the Synaptics Trackpoint.  It's ELAN but it's a new even thinner design which I think has been used on other thin models.   So before we all jump, I'd like to see some other reviews.   As I said, I'm sending my X1C6E in next week.  I'll post what happens.

Here's where I saw Lenovo is using the  Elan in the X1C7 vs Synaptics -> https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-7th-Gen-X1C7-first-look/td-p/4449954

"I'm a TrackPoint user and the first thing I noticed was the more "ballistic" feel of scrolling with the X1C7. It seems to pick up momentum more quickly when scrolling. No problem adjusting. Further investigation reveals that it's an Elan Trackpoint (vs Synaptics in the X1C6). I also note that the TrackPoint is shallower, using an Ultra low cap vs Super low on the X1C6. "

Have a great holiday!
