USB 3.0 Mini Dock with i5 X220?

First and foremost, my question:

Can I use the USB 3.0 Mini Dock with an i5 X220 (Read: No USB 3.0 port) and use the USB 3.0 port on the dock at full speed?

Now the context behind my question:

I want to have a monitor setup where I have two external HD monitors, as well as the primary screen running. From what I understand the graphics card on the X220 can only run two displays, including itself. My idea was to get a USB 3.0 video adapter to power one of the external monitors. I've looked into USB 2.0 ones and they all seem to perform pretty poorly at high resolutions. I know that you can get expresscard adapters for USB 3.0, but I want everything to be connected to a docking station for simplicity's sake.

Any ideas?

Re: USB 3.0 Mini Dock with i5 X220?

From what I understand this would not work. The docking station just provides an extension / duplication of ports available on the laptop itself, so you would be limited to USB 2.0 on the dock.

I'm happy to be proven wrong though if anyone has more info!

Side note: Ivy Bridge (so X230) is supposed to support triple head without the need for USB video adapters, but I haven't seen any evidence or documentation that the X230 actually does.
