The left USB port stopped working last night on my Gen 3 Thinkpad X1 Carbon.
Don't think it's a driver problem, as it's been working fire up til now.
The port just no longer exists as far as I can see. Plugging into it does nothing.

What does Device Manager show (under Universal Serial Bus controllers)?

1. It could still be a driver issue. I would uninstall the current USB driver even if it's up-to-date, then download the latest version and reinstall it.
2. It could be a hardware issue. The X1C3 has two USB 3.0 ports. Does the other port work? If it does then it's likely the issue with the other port is hardware-related.

Yes the other USB port is working, so prob not a driver issue. Dammit, I'm having no luck with these modern Lenovo Thinkpads.
If the X1C3 is no longer under warranty then an inexpensive 4-port USB hub in the working port is a lot cheaper than a new motherboard. It's not as convenient, of course, but that's probably what I'd do under the circumstances.

for emergency reset, power off the device and unplug the power cord.
then, on the back of the computer, search for a little hole.
use a bented paper clip to push the button in the hole.
(i assume this disconnects the battery physically or so)
btw. i have the same problem, but this reset does not work for me, see https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/data-connection-for-left-hand-standard-usb-po...
