Unable to get get highest resolution on X1 Carbon Type 3460-CB2 using USB 3.0 dock

2014-03-08, 21:09 PM

Connected to dual HP ZR30w monitors via dual link DVI cables to dock but Win8 Display Panel shows only 1280x800 (Recommended only) grayed out. What am I missing? Its a 2560x1600 capable screen. Review of Graphics driver says its the latest: 9.17.10.2875.

Appreciate anybody helping out...

Mayne

The usb dock doesnt support dual link dvi resolution. If you need to run 2 x 2560x1600 resolution from first gen X1 Carbon. Then u need to run it from the miniDP port on the laptop + usb 3.0 to DP converter.

Jin Li.....

You are correct about the 2560 x 1600 however the Dock does have dual DVI and supports the following resolutions:

2048 X 1080, 2048 X 1152 but not the max resolution of the HP Monitor ZR30w. If I could get this to go to 1920 X 1080 I would be happy. So something are not making sense.

Thanks

Mayne

Because for dual link dvi, each link only carries half of the resolution. In your case each link carries 1280 x 800.

Great......(not really).

So as you pointed out. I connected my miniDisplayLink to a StarTech active DL to DVI converter then to a DVI cable. That got me 1 display at full res. then the other is connected via the USB 3.0 Dock cable and the Primary DVI connector to get (still 1280 since I lacked the right cable) to hopefully full resolution. Maybe I should downrev to a T400 and use a dock that supports Display Link directly. ARGHHH!

Thank you.

Actually I have not acheived what I was trying to do - get both HP Monitors connected to my Carbon X1. I took the miniDP connector to one of the monitors only. I routed the USB3 to the  USB3 Dock but it refused to allow the DVI Dual port to display full resolution on the second HP monitor. MY cubicle buddy has both his working because he has a Lenovo 400 series connected to his dock using both miniDP connectors. So despite all the latest hardware - it seems the X1 does not allow 2 2K monitors through either arrangment. I think it will be easier to get rid of the HPs and downgrade to a couple of 1080P monitors instead.......

okay, you got the X1 Carbon Gen 2.

Your problem is slightly easier to solve now. Get an One Link Pro dock, connect one of the display to the displayport, and connect the second display to the laptop's displayport.

Sounds like winner - except
A. The Lenovo one link manual says is is not compatible with a Carbon
B. The connector on the link cable does not match anything on a Carbon X1

The two 2560x1440 LCDs I have (cheapo Korean brands) both say do not run them through a Port Replicator nor use onboard (Intel) graphics.  However, one of them I have been able to get to work with an HP laptop using displayport without issue.

Some things to try:

1. Update the firmware on your USB 3.0 dock.

2. Update the displaylink drivers on your Machine.
