Unable to install Windows update 1803

2018-05-04, 16:36 PM

Hi,

I have a clean install of Windows 10 where I am not able to install the latest Windows 1803 update.

During the update process after some reboots Windows restores to earlier restore point.

Afterwards I get error 0x80070002.

I have tried several times with the same error. Also tried the windows update repair tool, but no change.

All drivers is up to date according to the Lenovo support driver download page.

Anyone else having problems with the 1803 update?

I have a Thinkpad X1 5th gen. PC.

Model nummer 20HRS1MU00

Regards,

Stian

Hello,
You mentioned updated drivers, but is the BIOS up to date as well? I know that is checked as part of the update process.
You may have read in this forum about crashes on X1C after the 1803 update. I wonder if that may be why the update is backing out. If so, that's good! I'm not going to update my X1C until that issue gets patched.
Having said that, the quickest way to get these update issues fixed is to use the Windows 10 Feedback Hub to send your report to Microsoft.
Copy and share the link to your feedback so that others with the same problem can upvote your feedback.
Upvoting moves your report up for Microsoft engineers to address.
Here are instructions for submitting feedback and posting the URL to a forum discussion:

This seems to be a incompatible driver, tried disabling graphics and uninstalling drivers to no avail.

I really like this laptop, but now, I'm having trouble installing 1803 Win 10.

Thanks

BM :)

Yes... I also have an X1 Gen 5. This is an Intel SSD controller issue. When is MS or Intel going to provide a patch/ fix is my question? Thanks.

Re: Unable to install Windows update 1803

I have this exact same problem, except on an x220 tablet.  I just had a new SSD installed with a fresh copy of Window 10 Pro (version 1511). When doing updates, the system tried to install version 1803 upgrade, but wasn't able to.  It ended up rolling back.  Any ideas what's causing this?  I hope there's some solution.  I'm afraid to do any updates (with Windows 10 you can't choose which ones) as I'm worried it might try to install 1803 again (with the same result).  So I hope there's a fix soon.

Re: Unable to install Windows update 1803

Hello pmk3,

The x220 appears to be about a 7-year-old model.  Check to make sure that model has been tested for 1803. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht506455. If not, that may be why it backed out. Updates and upgrades are looking for compatible drivers and BIOS. Otherwise they won't install.

You could try to upgrade it yourself using the Media Creation Tool (which is set to give you 1803). If that doesn't work, roll back to your previous version of Windows 10.

Another option would be to contact Microsoft. See this article for the various ways to do that.
