Re: Unexpected Restart Thinkpad X1 Extreme

2019-07-05, 12:07 PM

Well, since a few weeks I experiencing an unexpected restart more or less every day.
System:

- Lenovo X1 extreme, baught in March 2019 (so more or less new).

- Windows 10 Pro 10.0

So this is a very annoying situation. Having processes going on that shouldn't get interrupted (like software compiling) and run for a few hours (sometimes over night), this is basically a "no go".

Right now, I try this solution:

Disable Automatic restart option (Solution 12)

https://windowsreport.com/random-restart-windows-10/#12

I'll get back (if I don't forget) with feedback

Cheers

If you are running extended and CPU/GPU intensive compiles, then my gut says there will be thermal issues.  I resorted to undervolting the pCPU using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU).   That seems to help a lot of people who are pushing these little machines.    Since I've been running the  World Community Grid for 25+ years, I've found  on this machine it WILL  cause the system to shutdown and/or reboot.   Since it pounds the pCPU and pGPU like a complile when the machine goes idle at night etc..

Google around using XTU for undervolting the X1E.  Take it slow becuase every pCPU/pGPU is slightly different WRT thermals, thermal pasting and transfers.

I don't know if that will help your situation but it's worth a try.   There's a 2nd tool some people mention which do similar things but I decided to stick with an Intel version.  YMMV. Later.

Re: Unexpected Restart Thinkpad X1 Extreme

Thanks for your inputs. I did have thermal issues in the beginning (Fan noise: link noise issue). Due to this issue I found that solution with dropping the voltage with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility already.

Done that, made the cooler stopping to be permanently so noisy. Actually, thinking about that I did drop the voltage I assumed that the X1 will crash and restart because of this issue. So today, searching again for that software "Intel Extreme Tuning Utility" to bring back up the voltage to the normal state it turned out, that the Core Voltage Offset was already reset. Having the voltage back at its place and not knowing since when, the fan issue seams to be resolved somehow, even though it gets pretty hot!

I have no idea what kind of improvements are done in the background since there are happening many systemupdates and many optimisations totally out of the users (and so my) scope.

Thank you very much. Will update as soon as I get the feeling that some improvements did work according to my systems behaviour.

And here some frustation word (don't need to be read, just want some reduce my inner anger a little by writing the following!):

Eventually, it's just frustrating, thought to definitelly not have tried to save any money when it came to decide which hardware one should get and then dealing with issues (impossible to find out who is to blame for) instead of getting forwards with my work. May I should change to raspberries instead and learn something while trouble shouting.

Forgive my bluntness, but undervolting is nonsense. If undervolting were truly necessary, Intel would have changed the voltage specifications of the processor. There is builtin throttling by Intel if there is an overheating issue.

I too have had the random restart problem. I am not sure if it's hardware or software. If you look at all the loaded software, mostly drivers,  to simply run the various chips, it's mindboggling. I wish I had an answer but I am still looking. If I find the cause to my random restarts, I will post here.

Yeap, the systems should not be restarting at random.  You are right, many times it can be related to bad drivers but once you load all of the latest drivers, you are out of runway.  I'm glad they replaced the MB and solved your issues.

FWIW, undervolting and overvolting are very useful ways to alter the pCPU's characteristics.  However, you are correct, Intel will not guarantee the stability of the chips which are not operating to the voltage specificiations exactly.  That's why there's always some wiggle room around the their specs and the BINNING process they use to sort their chips by speed etc..

Please let us know if your unexpected restart problem returns. I don't want to send in my laptop only to learn that's not the true fix to the problem.

Thank you.
