Unmountable boot volume

My X61s starts and shows the Windows XP logo with the loading bar.  It then goes to a blue screen with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME showing.

It does this in safe mode too.

I tried creating a windows recovery boot disc and changing the boor order to boot from cd first.

It then shows PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0000h

PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0300h

I then tried the HardDrive diagnostic

Controller Diag = Error Code 0000 : Read Verification failed

I have checked that my Hard Drive has not come loose.  I have not changed any memory modules and they arent loose either.

Is there anything else I can do before I try to salvage my data?

Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated....

Re: Unmountable boot volume

Hi, ptvw

If you're receiving the error UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and the HDD cannot even be diagnosed, then it sounds like your hard drive is failing. If you haven't already, you may be able to run ChkDsk to hopefully fix some of the bad sectors and make it easier to back up your files. If you have the Windows disc, then boot from it and enter the recovery console. When you get there, open the Command Prompt and type chkdsk /f. If it can run, ChkDsk might take a long time, so just be prepared.

Hope it helps,
