Upgrade EM7455 Firmware to Latest Sierra Wireless Release

2017-08-04, 21:00 PM

Current Lenovo firmware for the EM7455 is 02.20.03.22, however Sierra Wireless has a newer version, 2.24.05.06 listed here: https://source.sierrawireless.com/resources/airprime/minicard/74xx/airprime-em_mc74xx-approved-fw-packages/

After flashing with the newer version and rebooting, the card reverts back to 2.20.03.22. Has anyone else experience this? Is this something the carrier would dictate and enforce?

Any help would be appreciated.

Reason for upgrading is, when traveling internationally the unit has spotty connectivity and not very reliable. Hoping firmware upgrade would be a step in the right direction to resolving it.

Hi

How many times did you upgrade/reflash fw? All 4 slots for the fw images stored in the modem could be busy before you flashed it last time. There is a feature to choose one of the image as preferable as well as to remove them or reflash again with preferable image option.
But there is a chance generic fw from Sierra site isn't compatible with Lenovo branded modem according to its #SKU. This weekend I'm planning to reflash my em7455 with this fw and PRI image and test it.

Here is what the UI shows:

One thing to note, the original FW install I did I set the flag to enable GPS so those show up as COM ports now. Not sure if that is what would cause problems going forward.

OK, what's the problem now? The fw and PRI images have been flashed successfully and are the recent. Probably, previous time you checked the version too fast while the modem needs several minuts to reset once it's flashed.

The problem is it reverts back to 02.20 version after reboot.

After reboot is shows the old version again, basically FW update isn't sticking:

Steps:

Upgrade firmware, VZ App shows new firmware.

Reboot

VZ App shows original older firmware.

Run upgrade again to reflash, new firmware shows in VZ App, reboot and back to square one.

The Windows driver package maintain a list of firmware versions for different carriers in C:\Program Files\Sierra Wireless Inc\Gobi\Images\7455\Generic\FirmwareDefinition.xml

It will probably upgrade/downgrade to these versions automatically, so you cannot manually override the installed images wthout modifying this file.

But there really is no reason to install any other firmware than the one Lenovo provides... BTW, the most recent Lenovo driver packages now includes 02.24.05.06.  See http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gr/en/downloads/DS112204

I'm having the same issue and can't update the firmware. After the update, it keeps rolling back to the previous version even though I tried it several times. Did anyone find a solution for this?
