Upgrade RAM - Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen3

2021-04-16, 2:08 AM

Hello,

I have stock 8gb DDR4 RAM running at 2933mhz.

Want to upgrade to 32gb or more.

1. Is it advisable to get 2x16gb 3200mhz and install or Add 1x32gb 3200mhz and add to existing 8gb ram to make it total 40gb?

2.Believe the stock ram is also 3200mhz. Not sure why the ram is running at 2933Mhz.

3.Timetec Hynix 2x16gb 3200mhz ram is available but timetec support mentioned it requires XMP enabled. Anyone know how or if it is possible to enable XMP in thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen3 (i7 10705h)?  I presume there is no adverse effect of enabling XMP.  I was not able to find any option to enable neither was able to find any instructions anywhere.

Is Timetec Hynix a good ram (cheaper option $160) as compared to Crucial ($210) or HyperX ($230)

Thanks in advance.

The standard X1E3 memory bus speed is 2933MHz and the BIOS does not let you overclock it. So even if you buy 3200MHz memory it will always run at 2933MHz. I would never mix and match sticks from different manufacturers. This is usually a recipe for blue screen. Sell the 8GB stick on eBay and buy 2x of the same brand and size. CAS Latency (CL) is important. The lower the better. HyperX 2x16GB 2933MHz is rated at CL17 which is very good.

Hi Tkmishra,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Very few Lenovo devices have overclocking abilities such as XMP/AMP.  So if it is not in the BIOS, then the device does not have this feature.

Regards

Thank you @microlino and @voithos for your responses.  Wondering if you can please comment on purchasing Timetec ram module:

"Timetec Extreme Performance Hynix IC 32GB KIT(2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz PC4-25600 CL22 1.2V Unbuffered Non-ECC Single Rank 1R8 for Gaming Compatible with AMD and Intel Laptop RAM (32GB KIT(2x16GB))".

This one is cheaper by $45 ($220 hyperx 2933mhz vs $165 timetec 3200mhz). The 3200mhz Hyperx is like $240.(all mentioned prices incl tax).

Would Timetec be a reliable option in your opinion?

Thank you.

Yes, it will be OK. But it will run at 2933MHz.
