Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

I'd like to upgrade the display on my x201 laptop. The outdated TFT display is getting a bit old. And I could use some expert advice - or even intelligent guesses as to whether certain LCD panels will work in the x201 laptop.

The usual advice to upgrade a x201 laptop display is to go with a Hydis AFFS (similar to IPS) display e.g. the HV121WX4-120. Or alternately a Samsung PVA display e.g. the LTN121AP02-001. These are CFFL panels, so given my LED laptop, I'd also need an inverter (42W8009 or 42W8010) and CFFL variant cable e.g. 44C9909.

Okay great. But for various reasons I'd very much prefer to retain the WLED backlight, rather than change to a CFFL display. There are any number of forum posts saying that this isn't possible. But that appears to be refuted by some well documented threads that describe successful retrofits of better spec LED backlit panels in their x201 laptops e.g. using a Samsung LTN121AT07-L02 (27R2451) WLED LCD.

With that thought in mind, I'm trying to discern whether a x201 tablet screen will work in my x201 laptop? e.g. a Samsung LTN121AP0310 or Toshiba LTD121KX6B-110 LCD. These are multitouch LCDs. I'm not counting on the multitouch to be operational. Just whether the LCD screen will work in a conventional manner in the laptop.

Has anyone heard of these panels being retrofitted into a x201 laptop? Or spot any obvious impediments to using them in the laptop?

Have you performed the transplant before? If so, whats the secret to getting the LCD bezel back on properly? Lenovo's contracted on site "technician" botched it twice for me. Any pointers I can relay to them when they try again? Am tired of incompetent novices working on my hardware.

Nothing that a little practice wouldn't remedy. It's unfortunate though if the practice is on your Thinkpad rather than the shop laptop. A buldge or gap just means that the bezel is misaligned or a tab is damaged.

Assuming that he is installing a new bezel, he just needs to take a few moments to ensure that the underlying parts are seated, carefully position the bezel, press in one corner and work across to the other side. A little common sense rather than trying to force a fit and it should go smoothly. If it's not misaligned or bent, there shouldn't be anything keeping the bezel from seating properly.

That's correct, although those panels won't be cheap. I've dont similar AFFS mods to a X200 and a X201 of mine, albeit with the HV121WX5-100 panel (the glossy version of HV121WX4-120). The contrast and colors are much better than the LED ones I have, although they may not be that bright.

I'm not sure if the multitouch models will work ootb, but I'm quite sure they won't be cheap either.

Another option would be to try to get a X201s/X200s display with WXGA+ resolution (the best would be to get a complete LCD assembly and just swap the lids)

Otherwise you may look for any of these LED displays:

  • LG-Philips LP121WX3-TLC1
  • LG-Philips LP121WX3-TLA1
  • TMD-Toshiba LTD121EQ3B (WXGA+)
  • AUO B121EW09 V.2 (an older version of your current model)

Hope this helps!

Re: Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

Thanks so much for your reponse. Here's the current problem. This was after the third try. Original bezel he destroyed- snapped tab. This one he initially put on with a bulge up top and I had to point it out. Then as I described, he fixed it by moving a cable for the camera, but left in a hurry leaving me to inspect and seeing this:

Re: Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

That's very bad fixing! I would recommend you to keep insisting the technician does it in the right way.

Reading your other thread it seems to me that he's trying to install an WXGA+ bezel in a WXGA screen. The bezels are different and the WXGA+ one doesn't have enough space for the camera.

I don't agree with the statement that a bezel can be swapped only once. If you're carefully and the bezel is an original one it should be able to "resist" several swaps.

My two cents...

Re: Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

It was part #04W0360 according to the paper work he left behind. I think its the right bezel WXGA but looking at the x201 Manual it seems he didn't route the antenna cable properly in the lower left area (after I called him out on failing to do so on the top left and especially right areas). Its a freaking shame there are people like this purporting to be technicians. I provided the manual for the guy out of caution you get incompetents calling and left him alone but he had a chip on his shoulder about being a "professoinal". This picture is the result which is a complete waste of my time trying to remedy this.

Re: Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

There is no way that is an acceptable install. He should double check that he is using the correct bezel.. but more than likely you are right that the antenna isn't seated properly and that is preventing the bezel from laying flat.

Tasurinchi is correct - the bezel shouldn't have any problem being reseated several times.. If the technician simply paused, moved the antenna and then seated the bezel again without undue force it should have ended up installed properly. You can reuse a bezel multiple times, but in my opinion, the tech should be bringing a new bezel and using it if he encounters any issues. Or as a pragmatic way to create goodwill as a new bezel would delight many owners .

The bezel isn't that hard to install if the technician doesn't try to rush or force it into place.

Re: Upgrade x201 laptop.. with a X201 tablet screen?

I wholeheartedly agree with you guys. When I have time I will upload the first botch the technician did. This kind of shoddy work reflects poorly on Lenovo but I realize they are just subcontracting the work out. Nevertheless, I feel if someone has pride in their work they wouldn't leave the customer in this situation. Its pathetic.

Okay, back to the O/T.

Has anyone here tried installing a touch screen LCD into a x201 laptop?

Or looked into it and found some insurmountable obstacle?
