For the benefit of any subsequent pilgrims finding this useful, if not very active forum, the IPS X201 tablet display does drop into place into the X201 laptop. Note that it would be an unreasonably tight fit with the digitizer left in place.
I removed the digitizer with a heat gun as it was bonded to the display with optically clear adhesive. It's not that hard to do if one is cautious, but it would be all too easy to crack or heat damage the display if one rushed or was hamfisted with the procedure. Perhaps chaulk it up as an advanced hack that less intrepid users may want to pass on. There are a lot of mobile glass repair videos on youtube that offer useful guidance for those willing to try but looking for guidance.
End result after removing the digitizer, an inexpensive IPS replacement via Ebay. The X-series has always been a well designed workhorse series of laptops marred by woefully inferior screens. Nevermind IPS, Lenovo should be embarassed that a FHD screen wasn't introduced until post X240 release when it should have been a X201 or X220 option.
Now.. about adapting that Google QHD eDP display into a LVDS X230..
