I have been looking for 3 external display and 1 internal display, the laptop display, setup for years. I was contemplating between A285 and X395 since A285 is guranteed to support 4 independent displays according to the PSREF and youtube video (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcNO9YaGB3g). Note that the youtube video is A485 not A285. However, A285 should be able to drive 4 independent displays via mechanial Ultradock (40AJ).
Since A285 was only offered with Ryzen 5 processors and non upgradable 8 GB of ram... I had no choice to but to choose X395.
Eventhough X395 PSREF states that it can only drive 3 independent displays, I wanted to find out if that is the case. Using 3 QHD (2560x1440) monitors and Ultradock (40AJ) and X395, I was able to use 4 independent displays (3 external + 1 laptop). There was a catch, though. For some reason, the Ultradock could not drive 3 external monitors in their full resolution of 2560x1440. One of the three monitor's horizontal resolution had to be lower than that of 1440. For example, two 2560x1440 and 1920x1440 would not work, but two 2560x1440 and 2048x1152 would work. There wasn't any problem driving three FHD (1920x1080) monitors and 1 laptop display.
I hope this helps lot of people out there who are struggling to setup multiple monitor setup.
Conclusion #1: 3 FHD + 1 Laptop display is possible with Ultradock (40AJ).
Conclusion #2: 2 QHD + 1 FHD + 1 Laptop display is possible with Ultradock (40AJ)
Conclusion #2.1: 2 QHD + 1 2048x1152 + 1 Laptop display is possible with Ultradock (40AJ)
