Video Driver error causing a reboot loop -- Please Help :)

2008-03-17, 14:19 PM
Hello everyone:
I just pulled my new Lenovo X61 out of the box on Thursday of last week. It worked great for a day, then I shut it off for the weekend. I came in today, turned it on, and it is stuck in a loop.
I press the on button, it gets past the welcome screen then it comes up with an error I have yet to be able to read fully. But states something like "The video driver has failed, the computer has shut down to prevent damage".
I rebooted and get the Safe Mode menu, I tell it to use the last known good configuration and it does the same thing.

The laptop has been used maybe 6 hours, and this issue has come up. Can anyone advise me on how to fix this issue? Since it doesn't have a CD Rom with it, I can't just pop in the CD and tell it to repair, not that I really want to any way.

What to do?

THANKS!!!

Hi sscottincoppell, welcome to the forum,

If you press the blue ThinkVantage button when starting, ("To interrupt normal setup...."), you have the possibility to run diagnostics, in which case your TP will re-boot and load diagnostic tools, or you have the possibility to recover it to factory settings. If you choose the recovery option all files will be deleted, if you need to save files you can do this onto an usb hard drive before the recovery process begins, (you will be asked before it begins to recover).

I personally would run the diagnostics first. If everything seems to be in order delete the grafic driver in device manager whilst running in safe mode. If this stops the looping, re-install the grafic driver from C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\VIDEO.

My thoughts exactly.
