W10 can't see external monitor after ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.50

2020-12-19, 16:25 PM

I just installed this, and now W10 can't see my external monitor. Very unhappy about this, cz that monitor is crucial to my productivity. Does anyone know what might be going on here? Zero problems before this. Yes, I've rebooted the system, disconnected and reconnected the monitor, checked all cabling and cycled power several times. Also ran Settings|System|Display|Multiple Displays|Detect Monitor with no detection.

W10 can't see external monitor after ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.50

It's an X1C6? I have two of 'em here at 1.50, no problems with external monitors. Try the emergency reset small button in pinhole on bottom.
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

X1C6, yes. Never had any problems at all prior to the BIOS update. What will the emergency reset do? That seems a bit drastic.

It temporarily disconnects the battery.

Well, that doesn't sound so daring. I'll give it a try.

Worked. Would you be kind enough to explain this magic to me? Because I'm kind of amazed at its power.

Temporarily disconnecting the battery allows the electronics to completely discharge. I don't know the exact culprit(s), but from time to time, inputs or outputs to the system can get themselves into funny states, and the reset sorts them out. Always keep it on you list of things to try (shortly after "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" :-).
