What is "i7-7650" on X1 Yoga 2nd Generation?

2017-05-09, 2:23 AM

The current X1 Yoga 2nd Gen specs read, "Up to I7-7650U Intel® Core™ i7 vPro™ processor" but Intel's 7th Generation i7 mobile line-up doesn't include anything by that number.

They do list a i7-7560U, which is a plausible transposition typo, but doesn't include vPro. The i7-7660U does have vPro; both of these include the Iris Plus 640 graphics which sure would be a nice boost with the 4k screens vs. the HD Graphics 620 that's listed in the specs. Then there's the i7-7500U and i7-7600U with plain HD Graphics 620 (but "Smart Cache" as a consolation prize?).

I suppose I'll find out once they start accepting orders, but does anyone already know what CPUs will be actually be available (especially on the high end)?

Hi David,

Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding X1 Yoga 2nd Gen processor specifications.

According to psref it comes with four variants :

  • 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor (3M Cache, 2.5GHz, max. 3.1GHz)
  • 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7300U Processor (3M Cache, 2.6GHz, max. 3.5GHz), vPro
  • 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7500U Processor (4M Cache, 2.7GHz, max. 3.5GHz)
  • 7th Gen Intel Core i7-7600U Processor (4M Cache, 2.8GHz, max. 3.9GHz), vPro

And also upto I7-7650U Intel® Core™ i7 probably means max it has Intel Core i7-7600U Processor even in high end models.

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,
Prabhansh

The 7650 indeed does not exist.  According to PSREF, Lenovo is going back on their original plan to offer an X1 Yoga with Iris graphics.  If Iris is offered (contrary to PSREF), then it will likely be the 7660U, and they've just made a typo by saying "up to 7650U".

Thank you, Prabhansh; I'd forgotten about the PSREF (probably because I have always gone with a CTO build).

It will be extremely dissapointing if Lenovo goes back on what they originally said and advertised and do not deliver a Yoga with Iris graphics in it. I love the x1 laptops, I love the x1 Yoga and have wanted one for a long time but wanted something a little better than Intel HD graphics in it so I could do some basic light gaming. I have held off on buying a new laptop for literaly months for this model to come out. On the UK website it is still advertised as having Iris as an option, on the US website it has no mention of it. I am going to be very upset if they go back on what they advertised and I waited for nothing and need to go buy a laptop from another manufactuer.

Thanks for those thoughts, pyrrish and kgoodkinn. I'm looking for a quality 2-in-1 ultrabook with pen capabilities and have found that they aren't too common. Looks like best contenders aside from the X1 Yoga are HP's Spectre x360 and Microsoft's Surface Book.

The Surface Book with the Performance Base gets you a very capable (at least for business/content-creation work) NVIDIA GTX 965M GPU in a package that's only 12" wide, but you're stuck with USB 3.0 and mini-DPI (plus the proprietary connector) ... no Thunderbolt. If they refreshed this, it would be pretty hard to say "no."

The HP Spectre x360 does have Thunderbolt/USB-C (and USB-A), but also has only HD 620 unless you move up to the 15.4" screen (14" wide) where you can get the NVIDIA GeForce 940MX.

Oh, and there's the Porsche Design Book 1, but it offers only the i7-7500U/HD 620 graphics.

While it's not going to pack as much punch as a NVIDIA GPU, the option of the Iris Plus 640 graphics on the Yoga would make it more compelling in that area where it currently seems a bit weak relative to the dGPU options.

I agree completely. I know it will not be quite as good as an nvidia GPU, but it will be significantly better than an HD 620. It would be good enough for me to play CSGO and other lighter games, or games on lower settings, while still having a light ultraportable professional laptop for work that I can then play games on if I'm out or away or something and have free time. Plus that OLED screen is sexy. If it really ends up not having Iris as an option I will probably end up getting the most "professional" looking and powerful gaming laptop that I can without getting something too big and heavy and just use that for work instead of a Thinkpad now.

Interesting... they just (?) updated the Thinkpad Yoga page to list the 2nd gen first instead of last  and: "Up to Intel® Core™ i7-7660U vPro™ (Intel® Iris™ Plus Graphics 640)". Maybe it's only CTO?

(Oh; I see it's still last on the Thinkpad X page; I probably just never scrolled down to see the same text.)

Agree with you kgoodkinn in UK site IRIS Graphics is listed there as an optional, lets see whether it will be launched with optional IRIS Graphics or not & models are yet to release.

I while ago, I did a quick write up on the 2nd generation x1 yoga.  The hardware was not quite final, but differences would not affect usage.  (differences affected AC connection and charging)
