When will we see X220 with Low-Voltage CPU, e.g. i5-2537

Dear Lenovo,

dear x220-engineers,

after three years of staying with a *insert-name-of-a-popular-u.s-it-brand* notebook I have the desperate need to upgrade to a new, ultra portable device. Gladly this coincides perfectly with the release of x220.

Besides perfect display, perfect weigth and perfect price there is one thing bugging me... There are numerous reports of the standard-cpus creating lot of heat and thus prompting also fan noise.

Personally I would prefer a slightly less powerful CPU like the low voltage i5-2537 over the standard ones. These ones are stated to have half the TPD as standard ones.

Therefore I would like to know, can we expect x220 variants with these lv-cpus? Possibly also as university-model?

Thanks in advance.

Heh. I don't think Lenovo Forums censors other brands names. Smiley Tongue

The X220 fan issues might be an issue not necessarily related to the heat of a full power CPU. Probably want to stay tuned to the X220 fan thread. Can't remember if anyone reported egregious thermal output on the X220.

I'm waiting for low voltage models, too.

There are some interesting CPUs, I think.

i5-2537M - 17 W

i7-2617M - 17 W

i7-2629M - 25 W

i7-2649M - 25 W

Will there be any X200 with one of these CPUs in near future?

It's already listet for Poland. Have a look a geizhals.at Smiley Wink

I didn't see any anouncement or availablility for the rest of the EU.

I doubt the fan noise is due to heat issues. I remember reading several X220 reviews where they couldn't even hear the fan as it was so silent.

I've heard the argument that normal voltage Sandy Bridge is already so power-efficient that there isn't really a need to go LV for ultraportables.

But just imagine what a normally 6 hour battery life translates into with a LV processor. I would gladly trade some processing power for the same battery life in a smaller package.

You can consider locking the processor to the lowest multiplier on battery profiles. Smiley Happy

Re: When will we see X220 with Low-Voltage CPU, e.g. i5-2537

You can get an X220 with low voltage CPU if you purchase a "ThinkPad laptops with DOS", which basically means Thinkpad without Windows preinstalled. To get to that purchase screen, go to shop.lenovo.com: Shop -> Laptops -> Deals and offers -> Special offers -> ThinkPad laptops with DOS.

You'll see the "Intel Core i5-2537M Processor (1.4GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)" as one of the choice.
