Wifi keeps swapping to unwanted dock wifi connection

2018-09-14, 2:37 AM

My Wifi keeps swapping to an unwanted dock wifi connection

I have a good wifi connection: “myWiFi”

I have set “automatically connect" to MyWiFi

It seems that the dock also has a wifi named SG-A15050529

The first time I saw this wifi conneciton was after I connected my dock.

My computer often connects to this while I am computing

Then I get a message saying that I have an unprotected wifi network.

How do I stop this?

I have seen this problem before and its even there with a clean install of windows so it could be the Dock or the BIOS hardware at fault

Currently what I do is, click on the wifi symbol in the always there bottom row of my screen, and reconnect to my working wifi. There must be a way to fix it, e.g. turn off the dock wifi.

Hi persist, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Click on the SG-A15050529 and uncheck "Connect automatically". That should stop your laptop from connecting to this network.

Tell us if this helps!

I will try   unchecking  "Connect automatically" on SG-A15050529 when I next see it.  It appears intermittently.

I can see a few neighbours wifi and I tried unclicking "connect automatically" on those.  When I checked to see if this change was permanent, I I found that "connect automatically" seems to get reset automatically.

As I said I will try it when I can.

"Connect automatically" will get set on secure networks, but you will only connect automatically if you've entered the password for the network.

"Connect automatically" will stay unchecked for unsecure networks (with no password), like SG-A15050529.

SG-A15050529 is evidentally either a weak or intermittent signal or is visible only when you and/or someone else are in a location where it's strong enough to detect.

... By chance, does anyone near you/your dock have a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, maybe with the HotSpot feature running? Just wondering if that's what your laptop WiFi is picking up, and guessing at the "SG" in the WiFi SSID.

Regards.

Re: Wifi keeps swapping to unwanted dock wifi connection

2018-09-15, 8:19 AM

Thanks banana-man and nates. I have explored furthr:

My wifi was linked to my good wifi source - which has “connect automatically” set.
Then I logged off my computer and logged on.
My computer did not connect to my good wifi source. It was giving me the option of connecting to SG-A15050529.

When I click on “windows task bar” wifi icon, I see

“SG-A15050529 Open” To the left of this is a wifi symbol with an exclamation mark.

When I click on this it expands to show
“Other people might be able to see information on send over this network:
 “connect automatically” is not-ticked
There is also “connect” button

I right click on the “connect” It showed options: (1) connect (2) forget and (3) properties.  I chose “forget” (This could have solved my problem)

When I right click on SG-A15050529, this opens “settings” and I see:
Settings SG-A15050529
Connect automatically when in range = off
Use random address for this network = off
Set metered connection = off
IP assignment = automatic (DHCP) with “edit” button
“Do you have a question” and a “get help” button.  Clicking on this button took me to a chat “how can we help you”

Now, for the first time, I have clicked on the “connect” SG-A15050529 button.  I get message “you are unable to connect to this network”

Well that is confusing! I though my computer had been:
.  disconnecting from my desired wifi source, and
.  connecting to this wifi source.
*** It seems that my computer thinks I have no wifi as it forgets about my good wifi source despite my “connect automatically”.

Question: Does the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C Dock have a wifi connection. I reviewed the Dock user guide and saw no mention of Wifi. So it seems I have invented this possibility.

Apologies.  This would seem to be a windows 10 problem, not a Lenovo problem.

*** To NateS - Thanks for thinking about with imagination.  None of the 4 phones at home is an SG. I do not know about my neighbours

Thanks for following my torturous trail.

The next version of windows 10 is close to RTM so perhaps they have fixed some of the issues with Wi-Fi that some experience

My T500 has a fixed ROM so I can install a 802.11ac card and it has been rock solid with it even on a dock or in an area with a lot of Wi-Fi signals cloggng up the spectrum
